BACK PAIN? A HOT TUB CAN HELP!

We’re recognizing World Health Day today, April 7th with a look at the high rate of back pain in this country. Lower back pain is the number 2 reason in the U.S. (after colds and the flu) for a visit to the doctor. Millions of people suffer needlessly. For many years Europeans have used spa therapy (soaking in hot baths of mineral water) as an alternative treatment for various chronic diseases. And there’s always been anecdotal evidence that the hot water and jets of a spa relieve back pain. Yet, the effectiveness of such therapy for chronic low back pain has not been well documented.

In 1995, a study published in the British Journal of Rheumatology offered evidence that hot tub therapy has both short- and long-term benefits for people with lower back pain. A later study, published in the Journal of Rheumatology by a group of researchers in France, sought to confirm these results and quantify the overall benefits of spa therapy.

After three weeks of consistent spa therapy, examinations showed more improvement in the health status (as measured in pain duration and intensity and back flexibility) of the spa treatment group than of the medication-only group. After six months, significant improvement continued in the spa therapy group. In addition, their use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs had decreased.

The preceding research information was featured in the March-April 1996 issue of Arthritis Today, compiled and edited by Mary Anne Dunkin.

Suffer no longer! Ask your doctor abut a prescription for a hot tub to ease your back pain.  Many of our customers get tremendous back pain relief from the Moto-massage jet featured on many Hot Spring Spas. Take the hot tub test. Come in and try a Hot Spring with a Moto Massage jet which sweeps up and down your back giving you a full, soothing massage. Relief is just a soak away.

HOT TUB DUCKS MAKE REVOLUTIONARY BREAKTHROUGH IN OCEAN SCIENCE POSSIBLE!

Today is the first day of the 25th Annual Week of the Ocean which is a perfect time to tell you about a talk Blair and I went to Thursday night. Dr. Curtis Ebbesmeyer and Eric Scigliano did a PowerPoint presentation on their new book: “Flotametrics and the Floating World. How One Man’s Obsession with Runaway Sneakers and Rubber Ducks Revolutionized Ocean Science.” It could have been titled “How Rubber Duckies Go, so Goes the Ocean.”  I was curious about the rubber duck part, as you can imagine.  Ebbesmeyer has studied oceans for 35 years and he admitted he just didn’t have the whole picture about ocean currents until the unexpected spill of 29,000 rubber ducks bound for Seattle from China spilled into the ocean.

What happened next turned out to be the key to ocean currents.  Rubber ducks washed up on beaches in Sitka and months later on beaches in Japan. Three years later, more ducks washed up in Sitka, followed some months later by the arrival of the ducks in Japan.  And, so on every three years like clockwork since 1992.  These ducks are indestructible!! He realized that the Subpolar gyre (as a circular current is called) had a three year travel time.  He found other gyres have a six year travel cycle-the Subtropical gyre carrying 100,000 pairs of Nike shoes, for instance.

So one man’s obsession with runaway sneakers and rubber ducks has revolutionized ocean science. The lecture was riveting. Flotsametrics is his made up word for the study of the the flotsam and jetsam in our oceans. He recounted how flotsam has changed the course of history!

Dr. Ebbesmeyer, a professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington, can be found beach combing every chance he gets. If he had a million dollars, he’d go to the top 20 trash collecting beaches, photograph them and write a book sounding the alarm about the environmental impact of floating plastic trash in the oceans.  For the complete story of the great duck migration check out his website.

At Olympic Hot Tub Company we have our own “Duck Migration Project”.  Our customers have been taking their hot tub ducks on trips and photographing them in exotic locales.  It started when one was “kidnapped” and taken to Mexico by friend’s of a Hot Spring Spa owner.  The “kidnapper” send a photographic essay: “The Duck’s Journey” which will be feature in an upcoming post.  Here’s the rubber duck at Universal Studios and the Everglades National Park. Thanks to Olympic customers Yvonne and Gary Shimek of Edmonds.

Take your hot tub duck on a trip and send us the photos! We love following the journeys of Olympic Hot Tub ducks and their owners.

APRIL IS COUPLE APPRECIATION MONTH-A GREAT TIME FOR HOT TUB SOAK

We were bobbing (lollying really) in the our Hot Spring Spa last night and enjoyed having SilkBalance in the water. The the water really does feel different and I no longer have dry skin. What a relief!

I was feeling depressed by the weather. It has been high 45 degrees and rain for weeks, months. My husband didn’t say a word during my grousing and observed the crankiness for what it was-temporary. Soon after we got in the tub-you know how the water and jets just grab you and change your mood?-I was fine again. I appreciate him so much and know I don’t need a month to remind me!

But, I love zany holidays so thought I’d share.  Even if it is not your significant other’s birthday, anniversary, or some zany holiday they made up, you could still recognize April 1-30th as Couple Appreciation Month. Use this time during the month of April to show thanks for each others love and emotional support.  It’s a  time to remember to reinforce and celebrate your relationship.

Let your loved one know just how special and appreciated they are and how much you value them this month.   Making the time to talk in the hot tub is always a terrific way to renew your connection to each other. And the gift of SilkBalance available online from Olympic Hot Tub Company for your hot tub would be really appreciated.
