HOT TUB EXERCISES FOR FEET-WEAR HIGH HEELS? SUFFER FROM ARTHRITIS OR PLANTAR FACIITIS? THESE ARE FOR YOU!

Here’s an email from my friend Amy Goetz-foot reflexologist extraordinaire, AKA The Barefoot Phoenix. She’s the best “foot worker” I’ve ever found and you will see from her email that she is really dedicated to helping her clients maintain pain-free, healthy feet. Trust your feet to Amy for a relaxing foot massage.  She’s based in Seattle and does occasional workshops where she teaches the art of foot massage.

Amy wrote:

Hi Alice:  “I thought of you as I was doing my foot exercises the other day in the hot tub. Here are some simple ways to remain pain free on your feet, or help combat any pain you are currently experiencing.
The 4 Most important ways to move each foot are:
1. Ankle circles. Slowly rotate the ankle in both directions 10-15 times. Ankle circles stretch and strengthen all the major muscles that move your foot and will release tension from over use, standing, exercise, and lack of use (sitting).
2. Point and flex. Slowly point your foot as much as you can, gently hold this extreme for 2 seconds, release and flex your foot as much as you can, again hold at this point for 2 second and repeat 10-15 times per foot. If you find yourself starting to cramp gently ease off and reverse movement and the next round do not go to such an extreme.
3. Inversion and eversion. Slowly rotate the arch of the foot towards your head hold this movement for 2 seconds and reverse so the arch faces away. I like to call this one “conducting the orchestra” as the movement in the foot resembles arm movements used in conducting. Again repeat this exercise 10-15 times and if your foot is starting to cramp gently ease off and reverse the movement.
4. Calf Stretching. The easiest calf stretch leaning against the wall put one leg back until you have a nice stretch in your calf muscles. Another option could be holding on to the railing of the stairs drop the back half of the foot off the stair and allow calf muscles to stretch hold for 10 second then raise up on to your tippy toes to reset the muscles and slowly drop down again into a stretch. Repeat this process slowly moving in and out of active stretch 5-10 times. An easy way to integrate this into your daily life is to stretch while brushing teeth or cooking or when walking do a couple of stretches on the stairs or at the curb while waiting for the light.
If you experience cramping in any or all of these stretches this is an indication that the muscles in your feet are weak and need exercise. Please reduce the number of repetitions you do of each exercise and instead cut out 2 minutes 4-6 times a day to do spend 30 seconds doing each one 3-5 times each.
If you are experiencing Plantar Fasciitis, please do the first three exercises in bed before stepping on the foot, this will wake up the plantar fascia and make your first steps less painful. Please also do the calf stretches as many times a day as you can remember.
Bonus exercises: massage your foot with the hot tub jet, especially the arch of the foot. YUMMY!”

Cheers!
Amy

This Lopez Island Grandee model Hot Spring Spa is perfectly situated to take in the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the setting sun to the west.  Even though the Grandee is the largest model Hot Spring makes, the grandeur of the setting makes it seem small. This photo is the essence of hot tub bliss. Even if you don’t have this to-die-for view, having a hot tub will give you bliss every day-guaranteed!

HOT TUB IS A TRANSCENDING EXPERIENCE-ENTHUSIASTIC OWNER USES HIS HOT TUB 3 TIMES A WEEK OR MORE

Everyday we hear from our Olympic hot tub owners about their hot tub experiences. Most people say, “It’s great!” or “Love it!”.  Rarely do we receive a comment so expressive and eloquent as that from Olympic Hot Spring owner Tom Collins of Gig Harbor, Washington.

While in our Fife store Saturday he relayed the following to Karen Sorrels, his original sales person:

“We use our hot tub at least 3 times a week and sometimes more… usually twice on the weekend… and every time… EVERY TIME….. we get into the water, it is a transcending experience, taking us to another place…
It’s a moment when all the world goes away and we are just here in this moment and relaxed. It doesn’t matter that you’re at home on your deck- you are for that moment just carried away to another place.  We would never be without our hot tub.”

That is true hot tub bliss. And, that’s why I am in the hot tub business-to provide that kind of experience to as many people as possible on a daily basis.   Thank you, Tom, for expressing so well what I’ve known for 32 years.  Getting in the hot tub changes the way you feel and does take you to “another place”.

Karen mentioned, too, that he always includes aromatherapy as part of the hot tub experience. Tom uses Being-our wonderful line of aromatherapy scents especially formulated for hot tubs and spas. Try Being in your hot tub for the ultimate “luxury spa” experience and “being” in another place.

FAITHFUL DOG WATCHES OVER THE FAMILY HOT TUB

Thanks to Marty’s Musings blog today for some thoughtful observations on her dog Leo’s devotion to the family!  As Leo keeps watch from his perch on the closed hot tub, it as if he’s illustrating “that a good spiritual director is always observing the scene, getting the context, the bigger picture, and by his/her alertness helping you be alert to what is going on around you which you might otherwise miss.”

As he sits on the folded back hot tub cover, its as if he’s watching over the family to make sure they don’t stay in the hot tub too long. And, he keeps them from “getting into (the wrong type of) hot water,” writes Marty.

OK..it’s Friday, I couldn’t resist Marty’s Musings and her dog, Leo, and the family hot tub!

We’d love to see your family photos. Send them to us-with or without your pets.

COPING WITH FIBROMYALGIA-A HOT TUB DOES WONDERS

I found a terrific website that neatly summarized all of the issues and coping strategies that fibromyalgia sufferers can use.  One  of the best suggestions was record keeping. Take the time to record your coping strategies if you have this difficult to manage disease.

Coping with fibromyalgia is particularly difficult because the symptoms are invisible and chronic. A person can’t simply “get over” fibromyalgia with the passage of time or wishful thinking. Lifestyle modifications may help you conserve energy and minimize pain.  Some commonly endorsed strategies are:

* Note what lifestyle factors aggravate your symptoms and avoid them, if possible.
* Sit in a hot tub or shower to ease muscle pain and stiffness.
* Good sleep is a must! Maintain a regular sleep schedule, and try to get eight hours of sleep per night.
* Think “moderate” exercise.
* Understand your limitations and choose activities you can do and enjoy doing.
* Start slowly in short increments of activity and build up slowly.  Stretch properly before activity. Stretching in the hot tub is easy and safe if you go slowly at your own pace.

A number of Olympic Hot Tub customers suffer from fibromyalgia. We haven’t done any controlled, scientific studies, but we can report what our customers have told us after purchasing a hot tub. Their lives have changed significantly for the better, They report better sleep, less pain and mood improvement.  Their world doesn’t look as bleak as it did before the hot tub purchase and use.

If you know someone with fibromyalgia, please share this natural form of pain relief with them.  If you suffer with it yourself and are a regular hot tubber, please share your experience. If we can lessen someone’s pain, even for a short time, it’s a good thing, don’t you think?

REGISTER TODAY FOR THE 11th ANNUAL SAUNA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! YOU’LL HAVE TO GO TO FINLAND….

If you’re really into endurance and deep relaxation, the 11th Annual Sauna World Championships are scheduled for August 7& 8th and take place in Heinola in southern Finland.  That’s a photo of some of last year’s competitors being briefed on the official rules before the competition.  According to the guidelines, “competitors will have to sit in the sauna with buttocks and thighs on the seat. Posture must be erect (!!!)” The last one to leave the sauna…without assistance…wins an engraved trophy (and a trip to the hospital), which can be taken home, but must be returned the following year for the next competition.  Registration fee: 50 euros.  Take a look at the website.  I don’t think they expect any english speakers-the website’s in Finnish.

I’d say-don’t try this at home!

The sauna used in the competition is a traditional steam sauna. It’s all the more difficult to endure to the end because the air and steam can be overwhelming after 20 minutes. Take a look at our recommendations for taking a traditional sauna bath.  When you follow our simple steps, you’ll experience deep relaxation, a profound sense of wellness, better skin and a boost to your immune system that cuts your chances of getting colds and flu!  There’s nothing else like it for improving your health.  And, with a Finnleo sauna you can be sure you’re getting the best sauna built-for a lifetime of relaxation and better health.

SOAKING IN THE HOT TUB ON A WINDY NIGHT

It gets dark so late now that we were in the hot tub at 9:15 with a sky that was dramatically lit like this. The wind was really blowing across our roof top deck. I imagined white caps on the hot tub surface. Looking over at the 10′ aluminum ladder lying on its side on our roof top deck, I thought to myself that ladder looks really tacky, but what a lifesaver.  It will be here forever in case of an “emergency”.  On a similarly windy night a few years ago, the wind blew so hard that the door to the deck slammed shut locking us out on the roof in the tub with nothing but towels between us and the elements.  Being totally in the buff, we didn’t want to call to passersby or neighbors for help.  We have a key hidden outside and could have asked someone to get it, open our front door, come up stairs and rescue us. But, modesty and feeling ridiculous prevented us from yelling for help. Blair got out of the tub and shivering in the buff lowered the ladder to the entryway and climbed down.  Did I mention it was 42 degrees out? Brrrr. Blair found the key and came upstairs to unlock the door. My hero! For further insurance, I always use a door stop now!

Share your stories-ridiculous or sublime with us.  Once you own a hot tub, you “get it”-the change in your everyday life. You feel so much better-from soaking in the hot jetted water; from making time for yourself. You sleep better and your relationship is better because you have that shared time with your partner. Just the two of you away from distractions where you’re able to have real talks with each other-in the hot tub.

That’s hot tub bliss!
