THE HOT TUB IS THE BEST PLACE TO SHARE THE SUNSET WITH YOUR LOVER

The best place to share the sunset with your lover is from the hot tub, of course! July is share a sunset with your lover month and tonight’s the last night to celebrate officially.  This month long event seeks to make couple aware of the need to slow down and take time. Tonight will be ideal. The heat, high sirius clouds and slight mugginess should generate a beautiful sunset over the Olympics.

Before you head out to watch the sunset together, why not gather some of the finger foods that go well with hot tubbing such as sliced turkey, sliced roast beef, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, shrimp cocktail, and some bottled water, soda or iced tea. All available in the produce section or deli case of your local supermarket. Anything that doesn’t require cooking will be welcome!

Sustain your romantic mood from sharing a sunset, twilight, and the appearance of the first stars of the evening, by saying those little words everyone loves to hear,”Let’s go out for dinner” or “Let’s order take out!”

Exchange neck and shoulder rubs with each other to enhance the relaxation. Taking turns helping each other release tension is a great way to prolong the wonderful feeling you’ll have from hot tub soaking!

Thanks to Dr. Melissa Chamberlin for the idea. Her book, “Share a Sunset with Your Lover” is available through Xlibris. Dr. Melissa Chamberlin, Ph.D. offers practical suggestions for couples not therapies. Sharing a sunset is a simple yet mindful way to experience closeness.

HOW HOT IS TOO HOT IN THE HOT TUB?

On our trip to Yellowstone last week we saw this beautiful deep azure natural “hot tub” that looked ready for bathing. But, hold on! It was 160 degrees!  Seeing all of the natural hot pools that where too scalding hot to use made me think about how hot is too hot in the hot tub.  At Olympic Hot Tub Company, we start all new owners at 102 degrees. Children generally prefer it cooler-say around 100.  As it gets colder 104 feels about right to most people.  The temperature is really a personal preference.  What feels hot to some might feel tepid to others.

What you want to do AFTER the hot tub soak will determine the length of your soak as well as the temperature of the water.  If you want to feel energized, 10-15 minutes at 102 will be invigorating. Many people soak in the morning with a cup of coffee at this temperature for a terrific full body and mind wake up.  In the evening that same temperature will put you to sleep if you stay in 20-25 minutes.  At that point you’ll feel enervated and ready for sleep.  See more about health and hot tubbing on Olympic Hot Tub Company’s Health Benefits page.  A good thermometer is a must or having a control panel on your hot tub with a temperature reading.

This blistering heat wave we’re having in Seattle now-it’s supposed to be 101 degrees today-reminds me of my own summertime cool down technique. Sit in the hot tub. Yes. Sit in the hot tub. First turn it down to around 98. Your skin temperature is 92-94 degrees. If you sit in 92 degree water, you’ll actually feel chilled after awhile. You’ll get goose bumps.  But, try 98 on a hot day like the ones we’re having this week. You’ll be able to stay in quite a long time and afterwards will feel refreshed for hours as your body cools.  It’s not like the short refreshment of a shower where you’re hot and sweaty 15 minutes later in heat like this.  It’s a deeper cooling. I’ve been know to stay in the hot tub for an hour at that temperature while reading a good novel.  If your tub is in the direct sun, wait until the sun is not directly overhead, wear a sun hat and sunscreen on your face.

Be sure to check with your doctor if you suffer from any physical aliments that are adversely affected by heat.

WRITER’S BLOCK? SOAK IN THE HOT TUB TO SPUR CREATIVITY

It’s funny how almost every conversation in life turns to hot tubs. I had a great talk last week with my “coach” Jon Schallert of  DestinationBootCamps.  He has a mission: to strengthen small businesses and downtowns nationwide by giving top business advice. He’s my hero!  As we talked I remarked that he had an upcoming interview with Henriette Anne Klauser, noted author from Edmunds, Washington.  He said that her books, especially “Write it Down Make it Happen” helped him start his business. He’s a real fan of hers and so am I. She has a suggestion for writer’s block in her book “Writing on Both Sides of the Brain” that in itself is very creative: sit by falling water. Not still water like a lake, but falling water.

Since most people can’t do that on a daily basis unless they live by a waterfall, what better place to cure writer’s block than sitting in a Hot Spring spa with a waterfall feature!

The BellaFontanaTM on a Hot Spring Aria spa, for example, use HydroOpticsTM to create three illuminated water arcs. The Soothing StreamTM water feature delivers a gentle flow of backlit water. And the Amur ® Waterfall feature is backlit with LED lighting for a stunning nighttime effect. By combining water features with the optional sound system and Luminescence light system, you’ll appeal to all your senses to create an enriched relaxation experience. These features also make a visual statement – turning your spa into a piece of functional art and your backyard into a tranquil oasis!

The art of relaxing is an important one for creativity. Soaking allows you the space to relax and ideas to bubble up.  The “Aha!” moment comes when are brains are least engaged in tasks, chores, daily work.  So use your hot tub to turn your hot tub into a creative space.

BUBBLES? YES! BUT NO FOAM IN THE HOT TUB, PLEASE!!

In the hot tub, there are bubbles and there is foam. Big difference.  Bubbles are made as water is mixed with air and sent through the jets with force by a jet pump.  Bubbles help you relax and give a spirit of playfulness to your hot tub experience. Foam is the result of jet bubbles holding their shape after the jets are turned off. Foam forms because the water has contaminates such as body lotion, suntan oil or soap residue that hasn’t been oxidized or picked up by the filters. Bubbles form, are coated with “junk” and don’t pop! (Ever been to a public hot tub/spa and seen lots of foam? Hope you didn’t get in.  Warning:never get in a foamy tub. It’s a clear indicator that the sanitation is not at proper levels.)

Soap residue is a strange thing.  With our Western Washington soft water it’s very hard to rinse soap out of clothing.  I always ignore the soap manufacturer’s recommendation to use 1- 1/2 cups per load and sprinkle in less than 1/4 cup for even the largest loads.  Soap residue left by the large amounts that manufacturers recommend will not rinse out in our soft water unless you run the whole load again with no soap.  Soap residue is responsible for early deterioration of clothing…and the ruin of many a good batch of hot tub water.

Backyard Scenario: neighbors come over for a dip wearing their swim suits. Foam develops because your neighbors have most likely done what all other swimming pool swimmers have done: washed their suits with soap in the washer.

Either: request no suits (!) or ask that suits that have been washed with soap not be worn in the tub. There’s no need to “wash” a swimsuit. Just a quick rinse to get rid of swimming pool chlorine is all that’s needed.

In case you do get a bad case of the “foams” in your hot tub, here’s the cure: SeaKlear Spa Natural Clarifier. It’s actually made of crab shells that would ordinarily be dumped back in the ocean. Through a patented process, crab shells are turned into an agent that removes oils from the water.    Treat the water to make sure sanitation levels are where they should be and clean your filters. In the meantime, there’s SeaKlear Spa Natural Clarifier. Unlike synthetic, petroleum-based clarifiers,   SeaKlear Spa Natural Clarifier actually removes oils from the water. The unique, patented technology keeps water clear and clean. Use it regularly to remove oils and keep filters cleaner longer. Order some today!

WANT SOFT SKIN AFTER HOT TUBBING? SilkBalance IS THE WAY TO GO

Hello One and All,
Just wanted to let you know we used the SilkBalance for the first time March 6th.  What an AWESOME product for the spa and our skin. Over the past several months, my skin would break out every time I would use the spa. Using SilkBalance tonight my skin did not break out or itch. What a relief as I was about to give up using our spa because of this skin problem. Last week I went to my doctor and he gave me a prescription that cleared up my skin and tonight was the ultimate test. SilkBalance passed with a perfect 10.
Even Dean said he could tell his skin felt moister when he got out. The picture is of him in the hot tub tonight with a bright moon and two thumbs up for SilkBalance. Thank you for choosing this product for your customers. Y’all Rock and SilkBalance is AWESOME.

“NUDE OR NOT NUDE?” IS THE BURNING HOT TUB QUESTION

This being National Naturists Week, I couldn’t resist writing about the conundrum facing hot tub users: suits or no suits.  The naturists say it’s the week to go skinny dipping at the beach, pool or hot tub, but I doubt if they’ll get many converts beyond the hot tub and on a dark night at that.

Olympic Hot Tub Company has been asking the question: ” Nude or Not Nude? ” since 1982.  We asked our entire customer base if they enjoyed their hot tubbing experience up close and personal or did modesty prevail? The 1982 survey results had 94% responding that they went nude.

Modesty or discretion swept our soakers through the Regan years and only 64% voted emphatically: nude, 17% voted suits and 19% voted yes for suits and no for bare depending on the situation, lighting and company! Results were similar in our 1999 survey as modesty continued to creep up in popularity. So where are we now? It’s time for a new survey!!

The point is, it always feels great, nude or not nude whichever you decide! Not surprisingly we received many poems, jingles and short stories from fans of the unclothed “look”, but none from bathing suit wearers. The nude bathing fans were far more vociferous in their “right” to go nude.

Here are a few poems that celebrate each author’s opinion:

Our Hot Spring Spa is so accustomed
To bodies heartily and merrily welcomed,
We would not, could not, dare to think,
Of dipping blithely into the drink,
With bodies clad in beach attire,
Festooned with elastic and underwire.
The wondrous tingle of oscillating jet,
Of air and water warmly met,
By aching muscle and tired skin,
Should have no barrier to greet within
The confines of this glorious space
Where care and worries melt with grace.
So, to your query, our answer clever-
Do we wear suits?
NO, NO, NEVER!

Hot tubbing with suits is both boring and square,
What good does it serve being covered down there?
If done in the buff-stripped naked and nude,
The calming effect is so comfy and dude.
Under the stars, secluded in dark
Au Natural yields marital spark.
Small, tall or short; lean, mean or chub,
Alfresco is best in an Olympic Hot Tub!

Yes, I do wear a suit in our hot tub. For quite a number of years it wore very well and was most comfortable. My husband made a few comments about it lately saying, “You should possibly invest in a new suit since yours seems to be getting a little wrinkled and baggy!” I told him to put his glasses on next time we go in the hot tub and he might decide that I should save the money and continue to wear that old faithful “Birthday Suit.” Believe me-I’d never find another one like it in 100 years! I think he now agrees!!

Yes and No as you may guess
Depending upon who’s our guest.
It’s suits for family and friends ta boot
Cause we’re not pretty without our suits.
And besides the tree house in the neighbor’s yard
Tends to keep us a bit on guard.
But I’ll confess when it’s real late
And the stars are shining so,
A skinny dip in my Hot Spring Spa
Is my favorite way to go.

HOT TUBING BENEFITS FOR PROFESSIONAL AND “WEEK-END” ATHLETES

Both professional and “weekend” athletes can use a hot tub to help repair sore muscles and start the healing process for injuries. Neck and back pain, sports injuries, muscle pulls, spasms and soreness are often eased simply by a quick dip in the hot tub. Summer is the time when most weekend injuries occur. Even gardening can result in muscle strain and back spasms.  Golf is notorious for injuries-especially to back, wrist and elbows.

Your hot tub can also be used for preventive medicine. Water’s therapeutic powers lie in its ability to alter the body’s blood flow. According to an article in Tennis Magazine, “When you immerse yourself in the hot water of a spa or hot tub, the temperature of your skin and muscles rise, causing blood vessels to dilate which increases blood flow to the skin and muscles. Turn on the jets and let the pulsating water massage the skin, increasing blood flow even more. The result? Your skin and muscles loosen and relax from the increased blood circulation.”

Improve your athletic performance by using your hot tub both before and after you exercise:

Before You Exercise. Soaking in a hot tub before exercising relaxes your body and loosens muscles, making exercise easier and reducing the risk of injury. A pre-exercise soak will also help improve performance. In fact, some golfers swear it has actually taken a couple of strokes off their game.

After You Exercise. Soaking in a hot tub after exercising is a great way to wind down and relax your muscles. The hot, swirling water embraces you . . . massaging your neck, shoulders, arms, back, thighs, calves, and feet. But most importantly, hot tub use after you exercise will greatly reduce or even eliminate the stiffness typically felt the next day. You’ll enjoy your workout & sports time more knowing you won’t be sore the next day.

Important Note. If an injury occurs, it is essential to apply ice to the swollen area first. Never get into a hot tub when you have swelling! Allow ample time for the swelling to reduce before soaking in your hot tub. The warm, circulating water will speed healing to any damaged tissue as well as bringing much-needed nutrients via blood flow to the problem area.

STUDY SHOWS SOAKING IN A HOT TUB REDUCES KNEE PAIN AFTER KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

HOT TUBBING FOR HEALTH KNEE PAIN STUDY. A study funded by our trade group, APSP (Association of Pool & Spa Professionals) found that patients who had total knee replacement surgery who used hot water exercise returned to normal function faster than those who used land exercise alone. This warm water therapy study also showed those patients had greater range of motion and less pain and swelling throughout the recovery process.
Reduced pain and faster healing after surgery is just one health benefit of hot tubbing.  Although the sturdy is two years old, the findings bear repeating. See the complete story in the health & hot water section on the Olympic Hot Tub Company website. You’ll be amazed. If you or anyone you know has had knee replacement surgery, hot tub soaking is a great way to return to full function with less pain and less pain medication. Why suffer more than you have to?
