Sauna Health Benefits

Since the mention on Oprah’s show by Dr. Oz of the benefits of infrared saunas, we’ve had a flurry of interest from customers wanting to know more about sauna benefits.

Publications like The American Journal of Medicine and Harvard Men’s Health Watch have claimed that saunas can reduce a host of ailments from stress to illnesses cause by environmental toxins. One study of note by Dr. Lawrence Wilson, with a practice in nutrition and lifestyle consulting in Scottsdale and Prescott, Arizona documented sauna benefits during a yearlong intensive infrared sauna therapy program which he detailed in his book “Sauna Therapy”.

“We could really improve people’s health if we could get them to use saunas,” he said. Dr. Wilson’s primary work is with the elimination of toxins, such as lead, mercury and nicotine. He says that regular sauna use can dramatically speed up their elimination, though it does take time. “It takes a couple of months of sauna therapy just to fix your skin,” he says. “It’s like flushing your skin a couple of times a week. Compared to most treatments, it’s very safe-if it’s done sensibly.”

It’s the heat, of course-whether from infrared or traditional saunas-which raises the heart rate and clears toxins through the skin as one sweats. “There aren’t many methods of getting these chemicals out of your body,” says Dr. Wilson.  In addition, the increased heart rate releases a variety of hormones, like endorphins, known to make you feel better and reduce stress. Using a sauna can help make breathing easier when you’re congested, too.

While clinical studies show that saunas can temporarily soothe sore muscles and arthritis pains, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor first. “We don’t promote a sauna as something that’s going to cure someone’s health, says Dr. Wilson. And, he doesn’t recommend saunas for children under the age of 5, or pregnant women or any disease aggravated by heat-such as Uhthoff’s Phenomenon.

After you’ve cleared it with your doctor, a traditional steam or far infrared sauna are the two options to realize these benefits.  If you can’t handle intense heat, an infrared sauna is your best choice. Air temperatures in an infrared sauna can be 70 degrees, and you’ll still sweat because the light waves warm your body instead of the air.

Scientists in Japan report that Far Infrared Sauna treatments expand the capillaries and then initiate the start of a process to dissolve hidden toxins and are more effective at toxin release than a traditional sauna.

Sauna benefits are many, varied and proven. But the benefits won’t come to you if you don’t use a sauna regularly.  Our customers rave about the benefits they’ve received from better sleep and skin to stress relief and strengthened immune systems (which mean fewer colds and flu).  Don’t wait another minute to put a sauna in your home.  For less than the cost of a good cup of coffee, you can experience better health.

THE GOOD SWEAT begins with a Finnleo Sauna from Olympic Hot Tub Company.

Squirrels in the Hot Tub, Oh My!

Squirrels in the hot tub? Hold on to your bird-feeders, everyone, because October is Squirrel Awareness Month! Whether you consider them pets or pest, it’s hard not to be aware of these fuzzy fiends who are most active right now collecting nuts for winter.

There is a truly mind-boggling amount of information on squirrels floating around out there. If you can’t get enough of these bushy-tailed creatures and want to educate yourself further, visit the October is Squirrel Awareness month site and you’ll find enough squirrel lore to keep you busy for a very long time.

How am I going to link squirrels and hot tub soaking? Easy! Read this story from Olympic Hot Tub Company customer, Larry Jacobson of Seattle:

“Squirrels know me as Mr. Peanuts for my generous (at least I think so) offerings of peanuts. One fine Sunday in October with the sun back lighting my large tulip tree, we settled into the spa with beers in hand to enjoy the beauty of blue skies, golden leaves, and crisp air. “Ahhh – just right”.

It wasn’t long before my furry peanut-eaters showed up for my usual offerings. The thought occurred to me that sometime we might have company in the spa. Just a thought. Suddenly, one squirrel began chasing another and in the middle of “uh oh”, the lead squirrel with the chaser in hot pursuit flew over the spa edge…and… into the spa! Squirrels have big eyes but I’ve never seen larger when they realized the spa cover wasn’t in place. “Splash…Splash”.

Squirrels aren’t good swimmers-something I learned then, and without being able to claw their way up the spa sides were goners unless Mr. Peanuts came to their rescue. I lifted the first one out while the other seemed to scuba dive (without the tanks) in the other direction. Yep, I got that one out, too, and two squirrels, drenched to the bone, scurried off to wherever they go leaving wet prints behind.

I have the usual chemicals, but no “Squirrel Down”.  Can you advise me Olympic Hot Tub Company?”

Uh, Larry…stop being so generous with the peanuts.

Save Money on Your Hot Tub Heating Bill-The Cover is Key!

Covers are the great protector of your Hot Spring Spa and your energy bill! A cover that is made to fit your hot tub properly will create a vapor lock to hold in the heat, keep your water free of debris , and ultimately save you money.

Winter’s coming! How do you know if you need a new cover?

-You look outside on a snowy day and see no snow on your hot tub cover;
-The vinyl is torn, brittle, or cracked;
-The seams are separating;
-The cover smells of mold or mildew;
-The cover is heavy due to water collecting inside the cores;
-You haven’t replaced it in the last four years.

Do a complete assessment of your cover in daylight. Be honest…if your cover is heavier than a Barcalounger, you need a new cover!

So, what’s new in hot tub covers, you’re asking? Standard covers come with 1.5 lb density foam cores. For extra energy efficiency & durability, upgrade your standard cover to 2 lb density foam cores.

Hot Tub Water Care Goes “Green” with SeaKlear

Most people think of their Hot Spring Spas as alternative/ therapeutic vessels for wellness.   The last thing they want to think about is soaking in a vat full of chemicals.

In the last two years at Olympic Hot Tub Company we’ve made an effort to ‘go green’ with all of our water care products.

“Green” Water Treatment Program

Water care and water quality are central to our being green.  Our major product line was selected after extensive research to support our green philosophy: SeaKlearSpa water treatment products-especially formulated for spas NOT swimming pools. Big difference! Hint: Take a look at that bottle of dry chlorine you’re currently using for your spa. If it has a formula starting with “calcium’, it is WRONG for your spa! replace it immediately and use only a compound with the words “sodium dichlor” in your spa.

We chose SeaKlear for many reasons:

1)  SeaKlear’s product line is manufactured right here in Washington state-so we are buying locally to reduce our carbon footprint i.e. reduce the amount of transportation required to get the product (not to mention freight savings which we pass on to you-the end user).

2)  One of the best sellers in the line: SeaKlear Spa Natural Clarifier is made from recycled crab and shrimp shells. The clarifier uses waste products from the Seattle cannery industry that would have otherwise been dumped into Puget Sound.  SeaKlear purchases this ‘waste’ and uses it to create its clarifier.  Brilliant!

3)  The bottles used by SeaKlear are recyclable-and we help YOU recycle by taking back your bottles at the store. We GIVE you a dollar back for each returned bottle-helping to ensure the bottles are recycled.

4)  All SeaKlear products are made in the USA- so we don’t have any safety issues.  We are hearing that chemicals purchased at Big Box stores have ingredients from other countries where there is a appalling lack of quality control-especially with ” spa shock” products.  Customers have come in complaining about new skin irritations and problems as a result of using these “spa shock” products made in China.

5)  SeaKlear is easier on your wallet because it is  priced lower than “national” brands.’ This price advantage along with the fact that SeaKlear is made from recycled  waste products -make it a terrific choice for consumers. And, it’s also easier to use and easier on your skin than other brands.

So you can see why we switched to SeaKlear!

“Eco-Friendly” Water Care for Hot Tubs & Spas

At Olympic Hot Tub Company we keep 7-YES! seven- Hot Spring Spa models fully operational in each of our stores. They are all full of water, heated and treated with our green water care products. And we encourage people to ‘test out’ the tubs. Our goal is for you the customer/ potential customer to know exactly what you will be purchasing-from an experiential and environmental standpoint.

No Smell: Many people comment on the fact that our showrooms do not ‘smell’ the way other showrooms do-and most showrooms only have 1 spa that is fully operational. They also comment on how quiet our showrooms are.  We want our customers to know that we have selected spa models that are quiet and do not pollute the air with noise the way some do. Our water treatment programs do not pollute the air with unpleasant smells-as there is no off-gassing into the air.

No wastewater: There are no harsh chemicals in our spa water so you can actually drain the spa water into your yard and do not have to worry about harming plants or animals. Some people drain their spas for cleaning and use the water to irrigate their lawns or vegetable gardens. Other people save the water in rain barrels for irrigating later. The water is even safe for animals to drink. We are promoting the importance of not wasting water or creating water that is not re-usable.

No skin smell/ irritation: When you try out one of our spas, you will get out without an odor on your skin unlike most spas. In fact, the SilkBalance water care that we use makes your skin feel softer! Sometimes we just ask people to put one hand in the tub for a few minutes, then pull it out and compare it to their other, dry hand. Everyone immediately notices that the hand from the treated spa feels softer than their dry hand.

Since the day we began in business in 1977, we’ve had our hot tubs set up to try. We invite everyone to try before you buy. It’s the only way you can experience the difference environmentally and personally.  At least 80% of our customers soak before they buy. Shy about bathing in “public”? Call for an evening appointment. A Hot Spring Spa is an important investment in your health. You’ll want to get the right one for you and the environment….the first time!

By the way, that’s a photo of our Fife store above. All of the spas with covers down are hot and ready to go right now!

Hot Tub Soaking Relieves Fibromyalgia Pain

Fibromyalgia is a debilitating condition for many people.  Some real relief may result from using a hot tub. There’s hope for sufferers who use a hot tub regularly.

Those in pain inadvertently clench their muscles in response to the pain which invariably leads to more pain.  I’s a vicious cycle.  Blood flow to the areas most in need is cut off, and the tension just starts all over again.

For those with fibromyalgia, today’s typical lifestyle of working like crazy then coming home to relax on the couch is doubly bad, as blood flow to the organs and to the muscles is severely affected by too little exercise.  All this leads to the increase of pain over time.

Hot tub soaking is a great way to increase blood flow to constricted muscles. Taking a hot tub is far better than a hot bath because you can control the temperature for constant heat and have the benefit of jets for additional stimulation of your circulation.

Exercise, too, will serve to ease the pain. It’s just that getting over the pain in order to physically move, to walk or bike, can be a tough hurdle.  The increase in one’s pulse rate is a key.  Just a few minutes a day, walking or stretching will do wonders, and one way to ease the tension in order to be able to perform any sort of exercise is to soak for a few minutes in a hot tub. Hot tubs today, like Hot Spring Spas are energy efficient, easy to use and care for and come in a wide variety, at very affordable prices. Hot tub soaking can be a first step towards a journey of living with less pain.

As one soaks in hot water, the blood flow increases and the muscles begin to loosen up on their own.  Afterward, it is much easier to stretch out muscles that are already warmed up.  Once the body is loosened, walking or biking is much easier and much less painful of an activity.  Another way that water is helpful with those so inflicted, is through the regular practice of water exercises which are gentle and low impact.  The impact of such exercise is greatly reduced by the effect of buoyancy the water creates.

Stress on the body, especially on the joints is reduced, but still provides the benefits of a work out that will increase the pulse and so increase the flow of blood to the essential parts of the body.  This is just one of the many ways to alleviate the pain of fibromyalgia and to move towards the healing process and towards a life that is less painful. Many of our Olympic Hot Tub customers suffer from fibromyalgia and report that soaking in their Hot Spring Spas has made their lives immeasurably better.

Top 5 Reasons to Get a Hot Tub Right Now!

I meet a lot of people in the course of a year. When I tell them I am the owner of Olympic Hot Tub Company , I get one of two reactions. Some are already avid hot tub soaking fans and start the conversation with an exclamation about their love for hot tubs.   Others ask me why they should consider a hot tub. The number one answer is that it FEELS good, of course, but that’s not enough for some people! So I mention my top 5 reasons why a hot tub is a  “necessity”.  I can usually convince my listener that a hot tub is a need not a want.

Here are my top 5 reasons to get a hot tub:

1. FAMILY GATHERING PLACE- Flip open the hot tub cover, start the jets and watch everyone in the family leave the TV room or computer station and head for a soak. You don’t have to say anything; if you lead them they will come! Have you seen the research on families that have dinner together? Children have fewer problems & better grades. Teenagers who eat with their families less than three times a week are more likely to turn to alcohol, tobacco and drugs than those who dine with their families five times a week.  If you don’t have time or schedules don’t mesh to allow dinner together, avoid the guilt and get a hot tub. The hot tub is the next choice after dinner together and will have the same results. A nightly soak together in which you all talk about your day will do wonders for your family relationships.

2. MORNING REFRESHER-Start the day with a refreshing soak. 10-15 minutes at 104 degrees will make you feel like a new person especially if you’ve had too much to eat or drink the night before and haven’t slept well. Get your circulation moving and the endorphins flowing first thing and your life will take a turn to the optimistic. Listen to the birds chirp and watch the sunrise. With a cup of coffee in hand and swirling water to jet start your day, you’ll feel like the luckiest person on the planet.

3. AVOID HEALTH CLUB HASSLES-No need to drive to a health club for a soothing soak when you have a safe, clean hot tub in the backyard. Leave that smelly gym bag in the closet and head out to the crystal clean waters, chlorine-free waters of your own hot tub.

4. THE NEIGHBORHOOD GANG- Get to know your children’s friends by rolling out the hot tub welcome mat. You’ll have great peace of mind knowing that you know where your children are and who their friends are. Parents-I can’t stress this enough.  We sell many spas to parents of teens and pre-teens for just this reason. The peace of mind is priceless.

5. LIMBER UP- Prepare for a tennis or golf game by warming up in the hot tub. Move your joints through their full range of motion and condition your muscles. Guaranteed to improve your match or beat your handicap! As we age, we all get stiffer. Avoid injury by limbering up first. Also, as we age, it takes longer to recover from muscle pulls & sprains. Do yourself a favor-take steps to avoid injury by limbering up in your own hot tub.

What are you top reasons for owning a hot tub-especially a Hot Spring Spa? I’d love to hear from you!

Olympic Hot Tub Customers Rave Their Tiger River Sumatran Spa and Olympic's Service Department

It always makes my day to receive an email from a satisfied owner.  Here’s one I received yesterday:

Hello Alice…I would like to express my appreciation to Olympic Hot Tub Company’s Service Department. On several occasions I have talked to Dennis (Olympic’s service coordinator) and he has been extremely helpful answering questions and providing support. Dennis is friendly, patient and knows your products well. Please pass on a ‘Job Well Done’ to Dennis and the staff. That’s Dennis above.

On a personal note, I would like to share that we have enjoyed both Sumatran spas (photo at left-one of our most popular small spas) we have owned over the years. We owned one in California and bought our second one when we moved to Lacey. Now that we are retired, the joy of relaxation is multiplied after a day of strenuous activity. Also, enjoy your Web site and Blog section.

Regards,
Larry and Kenda Varney
Lacey, Washington

Thanks to Larry & Kenda for writing. Dennis and the staff at the service center earn many raves from customers and we’re always glad to receive more. We always appreciate customer feedback and have passed on their good words! I’m so glad that Larry & Kenda like the blog, too. :-)

Do Sauna Therapy and Exercise Raise The Level of Tetrahydrobiopterin?

Sauna therapy has been used to treat a number of different diseases known or thought to have a link to tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) deficiency.

Tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency is a rare disorder that increases the levels of several substances, including phenylalanine, in the blood. Phenylalanine is a building block of proteins (an amino acid) that is obtained through the diet. It is found in all proteins and in some artificial sweeteners. If tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency is not treated, phenylalanine can build up to harmful levels in the body, causing intellectual disability and other serious health problems.

High levels of phenylalanine are present from early infancy in people with untreated tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency. Infants with this condition appear normal at birth, but medical problems ranging from mild to severe become apparent over time. The signs and symptoms of this condition can include intellectual disability, progressive problems with development, movement disorders, difficulty swallowing, seizures, behavioral problems, and an inability to control body temperature. There is even research showing that Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and autism can result from deficient BH4.

Sauna therapy may act to increase BH4 availability via stimulation of Tetrahydrobiopterin. See the details on this government site PubMed.

Increased BH4 synthesis in surface tissues of the body will produce increased circulating BH4, which will feed BH4 to other body tissues that may have been BH4 deficient. Similar mechanisms may act in vigorous exercise due to the increased blood shear stresses and possibly also heating of the exercising tissues and heart.

There is a large and rapidly increasing number of diseases that are associated with BH4 depletion and these may be candidates for sauna therapy. Such diseases as hypertension, vascular endothelial dysfunction, multiple chemical sensitivity and heart failure are thought to be helped by sauna therapy and chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia may also be helped and there are others that may be good candidates for sauna therapy.

This all deserves further study, but for now, sauna therapy looks exceedingly promising for a host of medical problems.  Today’s New York Times carried a story about the ever increasing incidence of autism in the U.S. with about 1 in 150 babies born with autism-including  Aspberger’s Syndrome-an astonishingly high number. If sauna therapy can help even a small percentage of these children, it’s worth trying.

Stone Lanterns & Outside Garden Art for Your Hot Tub Landscape

Looking for a Japanese stone lantern or other decorative sculpture for your Hot Spring Spa landscape? Something that would be perfect to contemplate while you’re soaking?  Head straight to the Kyoto Arts & Antiques sale.  Twice a year Jay Gray & his wife, Kyoko, send 5 containers of Japanese antiques from Kyoto to their Seattle warehouse in Georgetown.

The opening day-the first Thursdays of May & October are mad houses. People line up for blocks to see what treasures Jay has discovered (including moi).  Don’t worry if you missed the opening. Jay & his crew put new things out every day as space opens up.

I’ve been going for years-sometimes everyday for the entire run of the show: eleven days.  But, I think I’m over that now. Once will be enough!  Our house has a number of tansu and other treasured decorative items from Japan found over the years at the sale.

I went to the sale this past Friday and was amazed by the selection of stone lanterns & outdoor stone sculptures at terrific prices-perfect for your outdoor Hot Spring Spa garden.  Home delivery  is available. You’ll have to hurry, though to see the treasures, the sale ends Sunday.  See the details for parking and hours at the Kyoto Arts & Antiques website.  If you have any interest in Japanese antiques, you won’t be disappointed.  Tell them Alice from Olympic Hot Tub Company sent you.
