Dr. Andrew Weil Says: Take a Sauna 2-3 Times a Week for Optimum Health

In his book “8 Weeks to Optimum Health-A Proven Program for Taking Full Advantage of Your Body’s Natural Healing Power “, noted natural health practitioner, Dr. Andrew Weil recommends taking a sauna bath 2-3 times a week. The health benefits are unbeatable he says.  Saunas promote sweating by exposing the skin to high heat. The body’s surface temperature while sitting in a sauna, even briefly, can rise to 104 degrees F. The heart rate will increase, and blood will begin to circulate toward the skin surface, causing the body to sweat as it cools itself down.

Many people believe it is this process that is the biggest benefit of a sauna.  Dr. Weil says that “when you take a sauna, the heat pumps up blood circulation near the skin and stimulates sweating. The Finns say a proper sauna elicits about a quart of sweat per hour. … It helps the body rid itself of unwanted materials and improves general circulation.”

Dr Weil also says in his health column, “I’m a sauna enthusiast, and I often recommend “sweat bathing” in saunas to cleanse the skin, soothe sore muscles, or simply relax. Sweating in a sauna can also be beneficial to patients with arthritis, asthma or respiratory infections, and is a good way to recover from overindulgence in food or drink. The sweating rids the body of excess sodium and other unwanted substances. It also helps eliminate drugs and some toxins and by doing so can take some of the workload off the liver and kidneys. I recommend regular visits to saunas or steam rooms to patients with liver or kidney disease.

Sweating in a sauna or steam room dilates the blood vessels, which reduces blood pressure and increases circulation to the skin. You don’t need much time in the heat – 10 to 20 minutes is enough to work up a good sweat.

If you have high blood pressure or a heart problem, be sure to check with your physician before going to a sauna or steam room. The heat can cause circulatory changes, including an increased heart rate. Overall, however, the only real risk to a sauna or steam room is spending too much time sweating. You can faint from overheating and from dehydration. Be sure to drink lots of water before, during and after your sweat.”

Take it from Dr. Weil whose enjoys a worldwide reputation for wellness advocacy. He  firmly believes that taking the steps to maintain good health pays huge dividends as we age. Taking a sauna 2-3 times a week is one giant step to attaining optimum health. He’s not the only raving fan of saunas. Our Olympic Hot Tub Company customers who have purchased saunas can’t say enough about the benefits!

Buying A Spa/Hot Tub? Top 7 Tips To Avoid Getting “Soaked”

  • 1.Buy the dealer before you buy the spa. Do business only with a dealer who will give you service as good after the sale as before your purchase.  Choosing a spa dealer is the most important choice you have to make in the buying process.  Pick a business that is trustworthy and can offer the service and water care advice that will make owing your spa a joy not a hassle. HINT: Think you can pick a trustworthy business at a fair or carnival? High pressure sales tactics should be your first clue that the business is not as trustworthy as  you’d like.
  • 2.Ask for references. A reputable dealer will put you in touch with customers in your neighborhood so you can ask them about the brand of spa and the customer service provided by the dealer.  A major part of a top quality dealer’s business is based  on referrals from satisfied customers.  At Olympic Hot Tub Company our referral rate is 43%: that is 43% of our sales are from satisfied customers who refer their friends. And, we have a zip code book with names of all purchasers. We know you’ll find someone you know who owns a hot tub from Olympic. HINT: Your chance of getting references from an online hot tub seller or a big box store are slim to none.
  • 3. “Add-ons” add up. Beware of “add ons” not included in the purchase price like an insulating cover, delivery to your prepared site, leveling, water care products, and on-site instruction and operation – all of which are vital and should not  incur additional charges.  Avoid purchasing from a company that plans to drop the spa off in your driveway for you and your neighbors to wrestle in place and attempt to level.  The day your spa is delivered should be one of the happiest days of your life.  Olympic Hot Tub Company’s full service delivery is legendary. Don’t risk injuring yourself or friends.  Professional spa installers should be sent to do the job. HINT: Online sellers are not the worst offenders as far as add ons or driveway drop-offs. That’s a typical practice for spas sold at fairs & carnivals.
  • 4. Don’t buy a spa at a carnival or fair or in a parking lot. Most spa exhibitors at carnivals, fairs and parking lots do not have a local showroom or local service.  They set up, use high-pressure sales tactics on you (!), and pack up the tent once the fair has ended. Many unwary spa buyers lose cash deposits and never receive their spa after succumbing to a slick salesperson at a fair especially the Puyallup Fair.  If you do shop at a fair, look but do not buy even if you are threatened with losing the “deal.”  A reputable dealer will hold the offer so take time to think it over.  You won’t find Olympic Hot Tub Company or Hot Spring Spas at the Puyallup Fair. We decided many years ago that the Fair was not the right atmosphere for selling hot tubs. HINT: Washington State has a 3-day right of refusal period for items bought at a fair. If you did purchase on impulse, act quickly to get your money back or suffer real buyers’ remorse. Make sure there is a local showroom where you can try the spa wet and be assured of ongoing service and a personal connection with a salesperson who works for the company – not one hired for the days of the fair.

  • 5. On the Internet. Researching your major purchase on the Internet is a good way to get the education you need to make a wise buying decision.  Do not consider buying a spa from an out of state seller or one out of your local area.  Beware of companies that do “in-home sales” exclusively.  You’ll have no opportunity to see the product, evaluate its quality, take a test soak, or check references.

  • 6. Want a hot tub with those frozen chicken wings? “Big box” retailers typically carry off brands or stripped down versions of brands by larger manufacturers.  Most of these spas have limited insulation and most likely very noisy pumps. If you’re buying on line you have no way of evaluating the fit, noise level or ease of maintenance. Choices are limited and the wait for service can be very long.  The low price you think you’re paying initially will cost you far more down the road.  HINT: Evaluate the total cost including energy costs for the time you expect to own your spa. You will pay more in the end when you purchase online, guaranteed.
  • 7. A hot deal on Craig’s List? Sure, you could get lucky. You could win the lottery, too. Chances are the reason people are selling their hot tubs on Craig’s list is because they cost the earth to heat AND they’ve never been able to get the water clean and clear.

Most Olympic Hot Tub owners say that their spa purchase was one of the best investments they’ve made.  Follow these tips and choose a credible, qualified, and expert hot tub retailer to ensure that you get the right hot tub the first time. You want the ultimate in relaxation, not years of problems. Be a smart shopper. Do your research before you buy and relax happily ever after.

New Study: An Infrared Sauna Improves Quality of Life for Type II Diabetes Patients

Here’s an important new study. Published under the title: “The effects of repeated thermal therapy sauna treatments on quality of life in patients with type II diabetes mellitus” this study poses an important question:  Can sauna use help those with Type II Diabetes Mellitus?

Dr. Richard Beever of the Department of Family Medicine, University of British Columbia, British Columbia, Canada published his findings in the Journal of Alternative And Complementary Medicine in June 2010.

He noted that decreased quality of life in diabetes is associated with poor health outcomes. It has been shown that far-infrared sauna treatments improve the quality of life for those with chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, and congestive heart failure. The objective of this study was to determine whether far-infrared saunas have a beneficial effect on quality of life in those with type II diabetes.

The study was conducted in Fraser Lake BC, a rural village in central British Columbia, Canada.  All patients of the Fraser Lake Community Health Center with type II diabetes were invited to participate. Each participant had a 20-minute, 3 times weekly infrared sauna sessions, over a period of 3 months.

To assess the participants quality of life, subjects completed a 36-item Health Survey questionnaire as well as “Zero-to-Ten” Visual Analogue Scale which measures a patient‘s pain intensity. The initial pain scale and health survey were measured 1 week prior to the start of the sauna sessions. The same questionnaire and pain scale measurements were collected between 1 and 3 days after the last sauna session.

The Results: Physical health, general health, and social functioning as based on the patients’ questionnaire scores improved. Visual Analogue Scales for stress and fatigue improved.

The researcher concluded that Far-infrared sauna use may be associated with improved quality of life in people with type II diabetes mellitus. The improvement shown after infrared saunas use was greater than the improvement of other lifestyle interventions noted Dr. Beever.

This is great news for patients suffering from type II diabetes. For a very low cost, one’s quality of life can be improved with a far infrared sauna at home.

Top 10 Reasons to Upgrade To a New Hot Spring Spa This Fall

1. NEW ACE Salt Sanitizing System-The First Completely Integrated Salt System for Hot Tubs-Cleaner water with no hassle.

Using a diamond electrode that breaks salt into powerful sanitizers, Hot Spring’s exclusive ACE Salt Sanitizing System is integrated with the control panel. One glance tells you it’s working. Less work for you and better for the environment than harsh chemicals that other hot tubs use. Great for kids and everyone with sensitive skin!

2. Environmentally Friendly and Energy Efficient

Today’s Hot Spring Spas use less power than just a few years ago. Full-foam insulation, heat capture systems, LED lights, corona discharge ozone systems, more power drawing less energy, custom fit insulated covers and synthetic wood cabinets that will not warp or let cold air in. Typically the average new hot tub costs between $15-$35 month to operate versus as much as $75.00 a month to operate older tubs (not Hot Spring Spas) or any new tub with little or no insulation.

3. Clean, Clear Water the Simple and Natural Way

The revolutionary new SilkBalance natural water care system eliminates testing, mixing and adding a host of chemicals to keep the water pure and clean.  With the help of the corona discharge ozone system that’s standard on all Hot Spring Spas, SilkBalance needs only 3-4 ounces once a week and the addition of small amounts of sanitizer or shock after you soak. That’s all. Olympic provides SilkBalance with all Hot Spring Spas for your health, and peace of mind. So, if you don’t select the ACE system, SilkBalance is the next best thing.

4. Easy to Use

Hot Spring Spas topside control panel is so advanced, there’s no guesswork. Everything from temperature to jet settings is clearly displayed. With our sophisticated IQ 2020 remote control, you can operate the spa’s electronic functions right at your fingertips, with just a touch of a button. You can adjust the jets, lighting; temperature and much more…even turn the tub on from inside your home. Go for simplicity. Hot Spring Spas’ control panel is easy to operate and requires no programming!

5. The Massage Your Body Has Been Longing for

Hot Spring Spas provide more jet therapy than ever before. Jets now provide a variety of actions; everything from pressure point jets to pulsing massage spinners. There are typically enough variety of jets on a new hot tub to give you a full body massage before getting out of the tub. Jets provide you with a complete relaxation session as well as aiding in invigorating your body when your tired.  Massaging action from your neck to your toes will remove the kinks and knots earned from a stressful day.

6. Hot Spring Spas Retain Their Looks Over Time.

Hot Spring’s Everwood cabinets retain their good looks for years. Gone are the old wood cabinets, which soon turned black and mossy in our northwest weather. Today’s Everwood cabinets are made of synthetic materials recycled for the good of the environment. You’ll never have to sand, stain and seal a hot tub cabinet again. A huge time saver.

7. Magical Lighting

With the introduction of LED lighting, the Hot Spring Spa experience is now more romantic and dramatic than ever. There are lights that encircle the tub, mood lighting to color the water on a rotating basis and lights that light your way to the tub. And these LED lights cost far less to operate and last longer than conventional lighting.

8. Entertainment for the Whole Family

From stereo systems, I-pod docking stations to TVs, Hot Spring Spas are ready for you if you want a home theater experience with jets & hot water!

9. Bubbling Fountains for Soothing Sound

New fountains that are backlit with LED lighting will be the centerpiece of your backyard escape. Bubbling fountains add a tranquil aspect to tubbing. Many scientific studies show that sitting by a fountain or waterfall is very soothing. Hot Spring Spas bring more relaxation home with their many water features.

10. Euro-Styling and Beautiful Colors

Hot Spring has modernized the look of the backyard hot tub with new Euro-styling that takes away the boxy look of older spas and replaces it with sleek styling.  New colors that are more vibrant add depth to the water especially at night. Seating now is more apt to be multi-level so that every member of the family has a place. Cabinets come in the most popular wood colors from faux redwood, African wenge and cape cod gray. Some Hot Spring models can be customized with faux stone to match many landscaping projects.

And, here’s #11 Silent Operation. Hot Spring is the only spa you dare put outside your bedroom window or on a deck! Hot Spring Spas are absolutely silent when filtering, heating and cleaning. Silent operation is great for you and great for your neighbors.

Olympic Hot Tub Company offers FREE test soaks. Most models are hot and ready to go. Call for your private test soak time. Come experience the Hot Spring Spa difference today.

Can the Benefits of Hot Tub Soaking Be As Good As A Massage?

Here’s exciting news published by the New York Times Tuesday about the health benefits of massage. What if you had your own personal masseuse at home in a Hot Spring Spa? Especially if you have a spa with Moto-Massage-the jet that sweeps up and down your back for a full back massage!

Imagine a warm stream of water sweeping up and down the entire length of your back, soothing overworked muscles and loosening all the little knots of tension. With just a slight shift of your body, the warm stream glides easily over the muscles on either side of your spine. It’s so comfortable that you’ll enjoy resting against it for an extended, invigorating rubdown.

I’ll bet the results would be as startling!

Times writer Roni Caryn Rabin asked the question:  “Does a good massage do more than just relax your muscles? To find out, researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles recruited 53 healthy adults and randomly assigned 29 of them to a 45-minute session of deep-tissue Swedish massage and the other 24 to a session of light massage.

All of the subjects were fitted with intravenous catheters so blood samples could be taken immediately before the massage and up to an hour afterward.

To their surprise, the researchers, sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a division of the National Institutes of Health, found that a single session of massage caused biological changes.

Volunteers who received Swedish massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol in blood and saliva, and in arginine vasopressin, a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol. They also had increases in the number of lymphocytes, white blood cells that are part of the immune system.

Volunteers who had the light massage experienced greater increases in oxytocin, a hormone associated with contentment, than the Swedish massage group, and bigger decreases in adrenal corticotropin hormone, which stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol.

The study was published online in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

The lead author, Dr. Mark Hyman Rapaport, chairman of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai, said the findings were “very, very intriguing and very, very exciting — and I’m a skeptic.””

If a single massage session does this much for one’s body, imagine the health benefits of soaking in a hot tub with the jets on! Here’s are the best non-prescription pain relievers ever invented: the jets in a Hot Spring Spa! Note to researchers: why not study the health benefits of hot tub soaking?

How to Buy a Spa/Hot Tub: Hint-You Won’t Find The Best Value Where Peanut Butter is Sold!

Buy Your Peanut Butter at Costco; Buy Your Hot Tub from Olympic!

Our guest blogger today, is Dan Pardee, Sales Associate in our Olympic Hot Tub Company Lacey store. Dan  is a wonderful writer who makes hot tub shopping fun! The Lacey store is a Google Favorite Place thanks to the staff and all of the customers who love shopping there.

Probably most people would agree that Costco is one of the best places to go if you have a large family or own a business and need to get the ‘best deal’ on the household foods and supplies you use on a frequent basis.  It’s a great way to buy in bulk, save money and hey, that ten pound tub of peanut butter will last you all year, right?

But should you consider buying your hot tub from Costco?  Heck no! Here are some important reasons why you should only buy your hot tub from Olympic Hot Tub Company they all have to do with “hidden charges”, warranty protection and water care:

1. The Delivery Issue-Or how you gonna get that big thing  in your backyard? Olympic includes offers free, full service delivery all the way into the backyard for every hot tub we sell!  (Costco only delivers curbside.  Be prepared to pay around $400 to hire a spa moving company to move it from the curb to the back yard or worse yet risk injury to yourself or the hot tub by trying to move it yourself.  How much is going to cost if you get hurt?)

2. Oh..an Electrical Subpanel? Tell me more.Olympic includes the 50 amp electrical sub-panel with every hot tub.  (With Costco you have to purchase one yourself. Ah, those pesky hidden charges!)

3. How will I get that cover off when I want to take a hot tub? Basic cover-lifters come standard at Olympic. (Costco hot tubs do not come standard with a cover-lifter and if you read the reviews by actual customers on the Costco site about their hot tubs, you cannot install one due to the extra large radius corners on the Costco tub.  But say you want to buy one anyway, be prepared to dip into your wallet again for another $225.00!)

4. Something’s gone wrong..who will do the warranty? Olympic provides its customers with world-class local dealer support, with local stores and a dedicated service center with our own in-house Hot Spring certified technicians.  Just call us; we’ll be there for you. (Costco does not handle warranty issues directly on their hot tubs, you instead have to call the manufacturer’s 1-800 number and they have to diagnose your problem over the phone.   They will then send you parts through the mail (you have to send back the old parts) then sub-contract out to a local spa repair company at their discretion. Yikes! What if you’re not handy? Having to remove the parts-how do you know which ones are bad will cost you a visit from the local spa-repair shop!)

5. What’s that again? When does the warranty start? Your full manufacturer’s warranty starts on the day of the hot tub delivery for Olympics Hot Tub Company.  (Warranty starts on the date of original retail purchase according to the owner’s manual for the manufacturer of Costco hot tubs.  So while the tub is being shipped the warranty is running.  Ouch!)

6. Here today and gone tomorrow? What was it you purchased? Olympic and Hot Spring have a proven record of longevity and stability.  Olympic has sold Hot Spring Spas since 1982. That’s longer than any other company locally has sold any brand and longer than Costco has been in business. Ask any customer of Olympic or owner of a Hot Spring spa. See Olympic’s many positive review on Google. (Unfortunately for Costco and Costco’s customers, many of the hot tub manufacturers they have partnered with in the past years have went out of business, leaving disgruntled customers with no way to obtain parts or service.  Good deal?  Not so much!)

7. You mean I have to be a chemist to take care of the water and it’s stinky? And the biggest reason of all!  All of our hot tubs we sell at Olympic come with the revolutionary, natural, SilkBalance virtually chlorine free water care system.  It’s easy and requires no testing or balancing of the water.  Just shake and pour.  (You have to purchase a Bromine chemical kit separately when you buy your tub from the big C.  Bromine is a terrible way to take care of hot tub water and is really hard on your skin! Another cost! Be prepared to test and balance the water several times a week, if you can figure it out. And, don’t forget to take a shower after you get out of the hot tub, unless you think the aroma of chemical bromine is pleasant to take to bed!)

So the next time you happen to visit Costco to pick up some peanut butter, walk on past the big shiny hot tub on display and instead visit one of our of our experienced hot tub experts at one of the five Olympic Hot Tub Company showrooms.  You’ll be glad you did!

Thanks to Dan. Great summary of the trials & travails of buying a hot tub at Costco or any other big box store or online.

Poetic Words About Hot Tub Water Care

It’s not every day that I get a poem about hot tub water care. Most of the time it’s serious business or a hassle.  That’s why reading this was so much fun. Olympic Hot Tub owner, Jo Moore writes:  Sorry it was hazy that day so the North Cascades are not showing in the distance.    Here are some words to go with the photo:
How do I love this stuff?
Let me count the ways……
It’s not nearly as tough
As it was in the old days…
We used to put water in a tiny vial
And tried to make a color match,
And then after a little while
We’d add many chemicals in a batch.
Now it’s just a simple technique,
When we go out to the spa
We add Silk Balance once a week,
Then relax, and say hurrah!
And ‘though we’re old and on Medicare
And somewhat past our prime
We use this tub with savoir faire
And can enjoy it all the time!
Thank you SilkBalance!!
Jo Moore,
Lake Forest Park, WA

Hot Spring Spa Sovereign owner

To her poem, we can add: With it’s money back guarantee, SilkBalance’s the best value you’ll ever see.   It’s no joke, lie or fib, switch to SilkBalance, you’ll be glad you did :-)

Like being a chemist? I didn’t think so! Take a tip from Jo Moore. You’ll enjoy your hot tub so much more with SilkBalance.

How to Buy a Hot Tub: The Warranty is One of the Most Important Things to Check Out and Understand!

When you’re shopping for a hot tub, it’s easy to get confused. There’s so much mis-information especially abut hot tub warranties. How to tell if you’re getting a hot tub with a warranty that really is a warranty and worth more than the paper it’s printed on?

Here’s a little known fact: Hot Spring Spas are the only spas made by a public company.  They’re a division of  MASCO- a Fortune 500 company that focuses on manufacturing and distribution of building products and branded consumer products (like Delta Faucets, Behr Paint, Weiser Locks, etc-for the home improvement and construction markets. What does that have to do with the warranty you’re thinking… There’s a piece of legislation called Sarbanes-Oxley that was passed after the Enron scandal of a few years ago. Sarbanes-Oxley makes public companies accountable and more transparent.  In the case of  Hot Spring Spas, they must put enough money to cover the warranty into an escrow account (that does not generate interest!!!) for each and every spa they make. The amount has to cover every year of the warranty for every model.  No other spa on the market has this kind of  warranty assurance that is your guarantee of performance.

And, here’s Hot Spring’s unparalled warranty. When shopping for a hot tub, dare the salesperson to show you a warranty that is this good. (Hint: if the salesperson says you’ll get the warranty when they deliver the hot tub, leave the store. Run. Don’t walk!) They can’t. There’s only one hot tub company that offers the best warranty on the market and, that’s Hot Spring Spas:

7-year limited Surface/Structural Warranty.

5-year Component Warranty.

5-year No-Fault® Heater Warranty.

5-year “No Leak” Plumbing Warranty.

Five year Everwood Cabinet Warranty.

The next thing to consider after reading the warranty is to ask,”OK, well and good, but WHO will perform the warranty service?” At Olympic Hot Tub Company, our factory-trained  service technicians  schedule an appoint at your home after one call to our Service Center.  No third-party service. No long waits to get back into hot water if something goes wrong. And, we answer our phone!!  We originated the “Just Call Us Warranty Service” in Puget Sound.

You may think this sounds obvious-the answering the phone part, but there are some companies that give a number to call for service that is NEVER answered. I’m not making this up! I’ve said for years that I’d be rich if I had 5 cents for every call from a disgruntled hot tub buyer who purchased brand X either from a local dealer (Rich’s) or somewhere in space online who called and said, “My hot tub’s not working and I can’t reach the service department of “_____”.  The phone just rings and rings.”  (Names of these offenders on request).

You won’t have to send parts to a far off factory, either which is the case with some warranties.  Did you know that some manufacturers require that you pay the freight (each way) if your spa needs to be serviced at their “factory”? This can amount to almost as much as a new tub, if you purchased a cheap one.

Olympic has a fully-stocked parts department for all Hot Spring Spa models and the vans of our technicians are fully stocked to enable them to fix your spa on the first trip should anything go wrong. And, you can count on 100% warranty coverage for the life of the warranty with no hidden pro-rating. Our “Just Call Us Warranty Service” is the best in the business.

Be a smart shopper. See the warranty; read the warranty. These days value for your money is more important than ever. You want peace of mind when you soak and you can relax knowing that you’re fully covered with a Hot Spring Spa from Olympic! Nobody backs you better.

Hot Tub Fashion Week: Best Towel and Decorative Clip

Have you ever heard of Aquis towels? They’re not cotton. That’s the first thing that’s different about them. They’re a super absorbent microfiber that wicks water from your hair and skin more thoroughly than other towels. They’re very soft, lightweight and durable. I’ve had mine for years and it only gets  more soft and absorbent as the years go by. Machine washable? Of course. And, very fast drying. The best thing about using an Aquis towel for after hot tub soaking? They’ll dry you off so quickly and absorb a lot of water with only a few swipes across your body. They won’t be hanging around your bathroom in sogginess.

On a chilly night, I put them in the dryer before the trek to my Hot Spring Spa. They’ll be warm and toasty when I emerge like venus on the half-shell. The hair size: is 19″ x 39″ and perfect to pack on trips. If you have long hair, they save dryer time and are better for your hair than a long bout with hot, hot air. The bath size is 29″ x 55″ and will stay in place with just a twist. They come in white, linen, pink and, if you’re lucky and can find them in the new blueberry color, snap them up. They won’t show the dirt!

Highly recommended. Check out the Aquis towel.

With your Aquis towel, you’ve got to get a sarong clip. It’s a minature flip flop! Definitely a must have.
