Olympic Hot Tub Recycles Cover Styrofoam Through StyroCycleNW

Last week  Olympic Hot Tub Company negotiated an agreement with StyroCycleNW to have them pick up all of the styro-foam inserts from old hot tub covers.  You know that those hot tub covers can get really heavy and water logged.  And, when the inserts become waterlogged, they’re not doing the job of energy conservation.  So, time for a new Sunstar cover. Our motto: If you can’t lift it, you need a new cover! We’ve always taken in the old covers when someone buys a new one, but until now we didn’t have a consistent way to recycle the old styro-foam cores. This new company will recycle the foam inserts into a host of products. We’re happy to reduce landfill waste and save on waste disposal costs.  Partnering with StyroCycleNW is big step towards our mission of recycling every end product possible.  When you’re ready for a new cover, your old one will be recycled when you purchase from Olympic Hot Tub Company!

How to Safely Use Your Hot Tub Water to Water Your Garden

Since May is the beginning of the BIG gardening season in Seattle and the time when rain is less frequent, gardeners start to think about having to water their flowers and lawns.

A question posted on the Recycle This website:

I want to use the water from my hot tub on the garden, it is a great waste to just put it  down down the drain.  The water has chlorine in it.  Is there any way I can remove the chlorine from it to make it safe to water my garden?”

YES! Read on.

A few years ago when Seattle was in the middle of a drought, the City of Seattle Water Department called me to discuss using hot tub water to water lawns and flowers (although not vegetable gardens). The topic came under the heading of  “gray” water- that is, water that has been used once and is not now pristine.

The City is all in favor of using hot tub water to water lawns and flowerbeds provided that gardeners follow our prescribed method for draining safely:

  1. CHLORINE When you’re ready to drain, do not add chlorine for 1-2 days. Chlorine is very hard on plant life. However, it dissipates so quickly from a hot hot tub (which is why you have to keep adding it!) that in a day or so there is no chlorine present in the tub.  Leave the lid open. Check chlorine levels with a test kit to make sure they are at zero. If they’re not, run the jets for 1-2 hours with the lid open and the chlorine will be gone.
  2. pH Plants in Seattle are accustomed to a slightly acid rain and tap water. If the hot tub water is too alkaline, plant life may suffer. Check to make sure that the hot tub water tests in the 7.2-7.4 range (neutral) before draining. If not, adjust the pH and run the jets to make sure any chemicals you’ve added are thoroughly mixed.
  3. Switch to SilkBalance SilkBalance is made of all natural ingredients that do the job of balancing the water.  Use of  SilkBalance will not harm flowers or lawns and pets can drink it with no ill effects.

Follow the steps above to reuse your hot tub water safely for watering your lawn and plants.

TOP 10 Tips for Caring for Your Hot Tub Filters

Filters are the hardest working component in your hot tub system. And, they’re the first line of defense in maintaining a clean and healthy hot tub.You can lengthen the time between draining and filling your spa by following these tips for maintenance:

ONE: Add SeaKlear Shock every time you get out of the spa and run the jets for 10 minutes. Add SeaKlear Sanitizing Granules once a week.  Save 15% on all SeaKlear water care products through this week at Olympic Hot Tub company’s e-store.

TWO: Get on the SilkBalance program for the best way to maintain your spa water and keep filters in their best working order.

THREE: Every two-four weeks rinse filters using the high-pressure nozzle on your garden hose. A Water Wand hose attachment will be a big help in doing this job right. Unplug the hot tub or turn off the breakers on 220v models before removing the filters for cleaning!

FOUR: Clean filters thoroughly at least once a month. Always clean when you drain and refill the spa for best water quality. To clean: spray with Seaklear Spa Filter Cleaner. Filters can appear to be clean visually, yet be plugged enough to cause flow and heater problems. The dishwasher detergent or filter cleaner is critical for a thorough cleaning and to strip oils and fine particles that are trapped in the pleats. IMPORTANT: if you do use the dishwasher to clean your filters, rinse thoroughly first. DO NOT USE THE HEAT DRY CYCLE OR JetDry anti-water spotting products when cleaning your filters!!!

FIVE: Seat filters properly in the compartment after cleaning. This ensures that 100% of the water flowing through the filters is filtered.

SIX: Maintain proper water chemistry at all times. Filters are only the first step to clean water. They do not kill bacteria.

SEVEN: Use Scumbugs in your hot tub. They absorb oils, eliminate the scum line and improve filter effectiveness.

EIGHT: Consider having two sets of filters.   Use on an alternating basis; the clean set in the spa; the dirty set soaking.

NINE: Rinse off before using the spa. Taking a quick rinse before using the tub will make water care much easier!

TEN: Switch to TRI-X filters-exclusive to Hot Spring Spas. A TRIi-X filter filters ten times more gallons per square foot than other filters and it provides over twice (65 sq. ft.) the filtration area of a standard (30 sq. ft.) filter. The TRI-X filter not only filters by using the element’s surface area, but it also filters by using the media’s depth (third dimension). With regular cleaning, TRI-X filters should last twice as long as regular filters. Sale on TRi-X filters through this week at Olympic Hot Tub Company’s e-store.

Happy Soaking! You’ll be more relaxed and enjoy peace of mind knowing your hot tub water is being filtered properly.

New! ACE Salt Sanitizing System for Hot Spring Spas

Introducing ACE-the first and only fully integrated salt sanitizing system for hot tubs using diamond technology.  Enjoy clean, pure,  luxurious feeling water.

Hot Spring Spas has revolutionized the way that hot tub owners care for their water. The new ACE Salt System let’s you enjoy the absolute best lifetime ownership experience with a Hot Spring Spa!

Advanced engineering Generates Cleaning Power

How it works: The ACE System uses a diamond electrode that breaks water molecules apart to create active oxygen. Because active oxygen is one of the world’s most effective natural cleaners, this is the primary way the ACE System cleans water. The active oxygen then combines with salt and other elements in the water to create natural chlorine as well as other powerful oxidizers.

Automated and More Hands-Free -One Glance tells you it’s working!

The ACE System:

-Automatically generates cleaning power using salt and water

-Fewer bottled products to buy, measure, pour and worry about.

-Saves Time because it’s more hands free.

-Easier than ever to care for your Hot Spring Spa.

-Is an Option for the 2010 Aria, Vista, Grandee, Vanguard, Envoy, Sovereign, Prodigy, and Jetsetter Hot Spring Spa models and can be added to the above models from the fourth quarter of 2009 forward. For older models of Hot Spring Spas, contact the Olympic Hot Tub Company Service Center to see if your hot tub is ACE compatible

Enjoy your spa more with softer Cleaner water: water looks, feels and smells great. The ACE Salt Sanitizing System makes your spa water sparkling clean and silky soft. Because the cleaners are generated from salt and water, you’re less likely to experience dry, itchy skin, irritated eyes, or the harsh odor of traditional chlorine water care.

Environmentally Safe-Natural & Responsible
The ACE system generates the precise amount of cleaners your Hot Spring spa requires based on its size and your use level. Since there are no excess chemicals, which often occur with manual dosing, your spa water should last longer between changes. That conserves water and saves you money. When you do drain your spa, the water has less impact on the environment because only salt has been added to the balanced water.

Available only on Hot Spring Spas. If you’re searching for better, easier, environmentally friendly spa water care, check out the ACE Salt Sanitizing System today. It does the work, so you don’t have to!

Dear Olympic:

I picked up my new Sunstar cover on December 4th and wow am I pleased!

The Sunstar cover tie down straps have held our cover secure even in gusts over sixty miles per hour. We also have wide temperature swings with colds in the teens and heat this last summer over one hundred degrees.
It takes a good product to hold up year after year. We replaced our five year original cover only because our English Lab loves the cover too! Thank you for making such an outstanding product.

Sincerely,
Steve Thomas
North Bend, Washington

WANT TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR HOT TUB HEATING BILL? YOUR HOT TUB COVER IS THE FIRST PLACE TO START!

Covers are the great protector of your hot tub and your energy bill! A cover that is made to fit your tub properly will create a vapor lock to hold in the heat, keep your water free of debris from the outside, and ultimately save you money. Winter’s coming!  How do you know if you need a new cover?    -You look outside on a snowy day and see no snow on your hot tub cover;
-The vinyl is torn, brittle, or cracked;
-The seams are separating;
-The cover smells of mold or mildew;
-The cover is heavy due to water collecting inside the cores;
-You haven’t replaced it in the last four years.

Do a complete assessment of your cover in the daylight. Be honest…if your cover is heavier than a Barcalounger, you need a new cover!

So, what’s new in hot tub covers, you’re asking? Standard covers come with 1.5 lb density foam cores. For extra energy efficiency & durability, upgrade your standard cover to 2 lb density foam cores.
And, for a truly beefy cover? Choose an ATLAS Cover! Standard covers taper from 3 ½” to 2 ½”, and come with 1.5lb density foam cores. An Atlas cover steps up to a taper from 5″ to 4″, and are automatically upgraded to 2 lb density foam cores.the most energy efficiency. Plus they’re stronger than the slimmer covers.

If you answered yes to any of the questions above and want to save money on hot tub heating this winter, call our service center to order a new one today!  Blog Special $75. off all Sunstar Spa Tops through Friday, October 23rd at 5PM.  Call Olympic Hot Tub Company’s Service Center (8-5Pacific time) 206 431-2876 to order and mention code: Blog Special! HOT TUB WATER CARE GOES “GREEN” WITH SeaKlear

Most people think of their hot tubs as alternative/ therapeutic vessels for wellness.   The last thing they want to think about is soaking in a vat full of chemicals.

In the last two years at Olympic Hot Tub Company we’ve made an effort to ‘go green’ with all of our water care products.

“Green” Water Treatment Program

Water care and water quality are central to our being green.  Our major product line was selected after extensive research to support our green philosophy: SeaKlearSpa water treatment products-especially formulated for spas NOT swimming pools. Big difference! Hint: Take a look at that bottle of dry chlorine you’re currently using for your spa. If it has a formula starting with “calcium’, it is WRONG for your spa! replace it immediately and use only a compound with the words “sodium dichlor” in your spa.

We chose SeaKlear for many reasons:

1)  SeaKlear’s product line is manufactured right here in Washington state-so we are buying locally to reduce our carbon footprint i.e. reduce the amount of transportation required to get the product (not to mention freight savings which we pass on to you-the end user).

2)  One of the best sellers in the line: SeaKlear Spa Natural Clarifier is made from recycled crab and shrimp shells. The clarifier uses waste products from the Seattle cannery industry that would have otherwise been dumped into Puget Sound.  SeaKlear purchases this ‘waste’ and uses it to create its clarifier.  Brilliant!

3)  The bottles used by SeaKlear are recyclable-and we help YOU recycle by taking back your bottles at the store. We GIVE you a dollar back for each returned bottle-helping to ensure the bottles are recycled.

4)  All SeaKlear products are made in the USA- so we don’t have any safety issues.  We are hearing that chemicals purchased at Big Box stores have ingredients from other countries where there is a appalling lack of quality control-especially with ” spa shock” products.  Customers have come in complaining about new skin irritations and problems as a result of using these “spa shock” products made in China.

5)  SeaKlear is also better for you because it is actually priced lower than “national” brands.’ This price advantage along with the fact that SeaKlear is made from recycled  waste products -make it a terrific choice for consumers. And, it’s also easier to use and easier on your skin than other brands.

So you can see why we switched to SeaKlear!

HOW TO EXPERIENCE “GREEN” WATER CARE FOR HOT TUBS

At Olympic Hot Tub Company we keep 7 different tubs fully operational in each of our stores. They are all full of water, heated and treated with our green water care products. And we encourage people to ‘test out’ the tubs. Our goal is for you the customer/ potential customer to know exactly what you will be purchasing-from an experiential and environmental standpoint.

No Smell: Many people comment on the fact that our showrooms do not ‘smell’ the way other showrooms do-and most showrooms only have 1 spa that is fully operational. They also comment on how quiet our showrooms are.  We want our customers to know that we have selected spa models that are quiet and do not pollute the air with noise the way some do. Our water treatment programs do not pollute the air with unpleasant smells-as there is no off-gassing into the air.

No wastewater: There are no harsh chemicals in our spa water so you can actually drain the spa water into your yard and do not have to worry about harming plants or animals. Some people drain their spas for cleaning and use the water to irrigate their lawns or vegetable gardens. Other people save the water in rain barrels for irrigating later. The water is even safe for animals to drink. We are promoting the importance of not wasting water or creating water that is not re-usable.

No skin smell/ irritation: When you try out one of our spas, you will get out without an odor on your skin unlike most spas. In fact, the SilkBalance water care that we use makes your skin feel softer! Sometimes we just ask people to put one hand in the tub for a few minutes, then pull it out and compare it to their other, dry hand. Everyone immediately notices that the hand from the treated spa feels softer than their dry hand.

Since the day we began in business in 1977, we’ve had our hot tubs set up to try. We invite everyone to try before you buy. It’s the only way you can experience the difference environmentally and personally.  At least 80% of our customers soak before they buy. Shy about bathing in “public”? Call for an evening appointment. A hot tub is an important investment in your health. You’ll want to get the right one for you and the environment….the first time!

By the way, that’s a photo of our Seattle store above. All of the spas with covers down are hot and ready to go right now!
