Wear a Bathing Suit in Your Hot Tub? Thank Coco Chanel

It’s the birthday today of Coco Chanel who invented the modern bathing suit using jersey traditionally reserved for men’s underwear.  She was born on August 19, 1883 and lived to age 88  working up to the day she died in 1971. Sure, her original suits had bottoms to the knee and long sleeves, but at least they were lightweight and not cut-off versions of heavy dresses. It was her inspiration that got women’s bodies out of layers of heavy clothing that restricted movement when bathing. From her original design, it was only a matter of time before the legs were shortened, the sleeves were shortened and the modern bathing suit arrived.

So, if you’re soaking in your hot tub in a bathing suit tonight, thank Coco.

What To Do in The Hot Tub? Give Your Partner as Hand Reflexology Massage!

A really nice thing to do in your Hot Spring Spa is give your partner (and receive!) a hand reflexology massage. We all suffer from things like headaches and backaches from time to time and hand reflexology just might provide quick relief.

Hand reflexology is not as well known as foot reflexology, but the principles are the same. There are points on the hands that correspond to areas of the body. The  diagram above shows those areas.

HOW TO GIVE A HAND REFLEXOLOGY MASSAGE: Gently massage each point in turn starting at the head (around the thumb area) and working down across the neck, throat, and chest down to the feet. Hand reflexology has an advantage over foot reflexology because it can be performed anywhere. Start with gentle pressure.  Increase pressure gradually but ease off if it gets painful.

These are useful techniques to learn for the treatment of simple every day complaints. (Never use it if there is likely to be an under lying injury, or medical condition.) Here are a few:

HEADACHE:

If you have a headache, try stimulating the top of the thumb and the part below which represents the neck area to find relief.

STOMACH UPSET:

Gently massage the heel of the thumb and the area across the center of the hand. If there is pain, stop immediately because this may indicate something deeper that requires medical treatment.

LOWER SPINAL PAIN:

The point where the center of your hand joins your wrist can be stimulated to give relief from lower back pain. This is a perfect antidote to backache caused by sitting at a computer for too long. Always seek medical advice if back pain persists.

Try hand reflexology in hot tub. It can’t hurt, feels good and who doesn’t like to hold hands with your partner?? Let me know how it goes!

Hot Tub Astronomy

Hot tub astronomy is a great thing to do in the summer.  Olympic Hot Tub Company customers tell me that it is one of the top benefits of owing a hot tub-being out in nature and seeing the stars.  So, sit in your hot tub late at night and star gaze. Say a thank you to the weather for cooperating tonight and tomorrow night by giving us clear skies!

Meteors, also popularly called falling stars or shooting stars are chunks of metal or rock from space that collide with Earth’s atmosphere and vaporize as they fall to Earth. Many stargazers and amateur astronomers enjoy meteor watching. What is the best place and time to see meteors?

Stargazers waiting for the best time to observe the 2010 hopefully spectacular Perseid meteor shower should watch it tonight and tomorrow night after midnight.

The Perseid peaks early on the night of August 12, 2010. That means the best chance of seeing Perseid meteors is between midnight and dawn on the mornings of Thursday August 12 and Friday August 13, 2010. The moon will have set after midnight, so the dark sky will allow stargazers to see more meteors. For more details on the 2010 Perseid meteor shower  and images of Perseid meteors, click on this link.

To see the Perseid meteor shower, find a dark sky and look to the northeast. no binoculars, telescopes, or other optical aids are needed.

Happy hot tub meteor hunting.

What Not To Bring In The Hot Tub-The Top Ten No, Nos of Hot Tubbing

You can have a great summer of hot tub soaking by following these tips.

1. Alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant and hot water is a stimulant. Passing out or falling asleep in the hot tub is not hard to do after a few drinks.  There have been deaths due to drowning in hot tubs attributed to alcohol use.  So,save the drinks for after your soak.

2. Glass. You want to stay hydrated while soaking and drinking a cool “glass” of water, fruit juice or tea is such a pleasant way to go. But it’s so easy to drop a “glass” made of glass and have it shatter on the way to the tub or once you’re soaking.  Of course, you don’t want glass fragments in or around the tub. Always use plastic cups and containers around the hot tub.

3. Bubble Bath or other sudsing agents. Sure it looks like fun seeing all of the foam that can result from hot water, jets and bubble bath, but it’s a sorry mess to clean up. Typically it’s best to drain the tub and start over with fresh water if bubble bath or high sudsing agents have been added to the hot tub either accidentally or as a prank. First clean the filters and the spa shell if you find mountains of foam. Add fresh water and balancers to  clean water.

4. Swimming Pool Chemicals. It’s tempting as you’re cruising the aisles of big box stores to fall for really cheap chlorine that’s says for “Pools and hot tubs”.  STOP! BAD IDEA. Swimming pool chemicals are for swimming pools. They’re not for use in the higher temperatures of a hot tub. Hot tub water chemicals, especially chlorine have a specific formula that lasts in hot water won’t turn the water cloudy and has the right pH for hot tubbing. Buy o chemicals that are specifically formulated for hot tubs and spas. For example, SeaKlear brand makes a distinction between all water care products. They’re clearly labeled “pool” or “spa”. Pool chlorine is a calcium based formula; hot tub chlorine is a sodium based formula. If it doesn’t say sodium di-chlor on the label, leave it on the shelf no matter how cheap it is! The advice applies to water balancers. If it doesn’t say for hot tubs and spas, don’t buy it.

5. Electronics. Water and electronics don’t mix. Stick to battery operated toys and games unless the music or television system is part of your hot tub or spa and designed to operate near water. Wouldn’t you hate to drop your i-pod or iphone in the water?

6. Bathing Suits washed with soap. Avoid sudsy residue by rinsing suits in water only. Even if you’ve worn your suit in a heavily chlorinated swimming pool, you don’t need soap to rinse only clear water.

7. Open Sores. Please use common sense and let open sores heal before tubbing.

8. A Hot, Sweaty Body. Even though today’s advanced water care systems can handle sweat, why not shower first and avoid potential water problems? Sweat has organic compounds that are neutralized by chlorine, but the more sweat the greater the need for chlorine and shock. And, it’s best to cool down before you soak anyway.

9. Sun Tan Oil. Why add oil to the tub? Rinse off before you soak.

10. A Grumpy Attitude. Soaking is about relaxing and having fun. Chill out on land and come to the tub with an open heart and mellow attitude.

View the Full Moon Tonight From Your Hot Tub!

Take advantage of the clear skies and full moon-hot tubbing tonight will be a rare treat. The full moon on the 25th of July is called the Buck Moon by Native Americans of the Great Lakes and New England. The name comes from this time of year when new antlers of the buck deer begin to appear. It’s also called “Thunder Moon” because of summer storms.

Whatever you want to call it, don’t miss hot tubbing tonight! There’s nothing better than hot tubbing under a big summer full moon. It’ll be clear tonight so don’t miss this opportunity to bathe under the moon and stars. Count the number of satellites  and call out the constellations and major stars. Sink into the water and relax completely. It’s doesn’t get any better than this!

July 14th Is National Nude Day!

National Nude Day is today July 14th. As a hot tub lover, you may love hot tubbing nude, but not want to show it all when not heading for the water.  Right? But National Nude Day is one kind of  celebration  for how to keep cool on a hot , sticky summer day.

National Nude Day is a purported to be a serious event with all of the nudist groups around the world.  Nudists believe that the body is a beautiful thing, and meant to be displayed.  We’re not disputing the “beautiful”, it’s the “display”  that most people have a problem with! Nudist colonies, nude beaches, and other venues exist to cater to the preferences of individuals who seek to walk around “au natural”.

We will not speak to whether this is right or wrong. We’re simply making you aware  of this holiday. Snicker if you will. But, no “sleeze”  please about this holiday. We have no photo to illustrate this post because there is nothing worse than seeing someone’s hot tub party pics the day after.  Check out our hot tub etiquette tips for more on this.  Imagination is just that..and so much better left to the imagination in this case!

Interestingly, we found a lot of sites promoting Nude Day T-shirts. But, isn’t this problematic? How can you wear a T-shirt on National Nude Day!??

The Origin of National Nude Day:  Our research couldn’t locate the creator, or the origin of this day. Although this “holiday” appears to have originated in New Zealand, we didn’t find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day.  We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.  Oh well, it’s fun any way!

Thanks to Holiday Insights for the info on National Nude Day.

Nude in the hot tub or not nude? Let us know which you prefer. Or, does your choice of bathing suit or not depend on whom you’re soaking with?

What’s The Perfect Hot Tub Temperature? It Depends on What You Want To Do After Soaking

At Olympic Hot Tub Company, we recommend that all new owners start out with a 102 degree temperature setting for their new hot tub.  Children generally prefer it cooler-say around 100.  As the outdoor temperature gets colder, 104 feels about right to most people.  The temperature is really a personal preference.  What feels hot to some might feel tepid to others.

What you want to do AFTER the hot tub soak will determine the length of your soak as well as the temperature of the water.  If you want to feel energized, 10-15 minutes at 102 will be invigorating. Many people soak in the morning with a cup of coffee at this temperature for a terrific full body and mind wake up.  In the evening that same temperature will put you to sleep if you stay in 20-25 minutes.  At that point you’ll feel enervated and ready for sleep.  See more about health and hot tubbing on Olympic Hot Tub Company’s Health Benefits page. A good thermometer is a must or having a control panel on your hot tub with a temperature reading.

Be sure to check with your doctor if you suffer from any physical aliments that are adversely affected by heat.

What’s The Perfect Hot Tub Drink? Iced Tea

When some people think of summertime drinks, they think of lemonade or Kool Aid or sodas.  It’s finally warm enough to think about cool drinks.  When it comes to cooling off on hot days and having something wonderful and non-alcoholic to drink in your hot tub, I personally think nothing beats a tall, cold, glass of southern-style iced tea. That’s my sweet-tooth coming out. Pass the sugar.

The best tea is still old-fashioned “sun-tea” made fresh in the morning. A little more work-yes-but worth the effort. We used to call it “sun tea” because it was “brewed” by setting a big jar with ten or more tea bags in the sun then chilled in the fridge. By the time it “brewed” and chilled, it would be late afternoon and you’d be dying for something cold to drink. You don’t have to wait for that refreshing drink now thanks to ready-made teas. They can be chilling in the fridge ready to take out to the tub to quench your thirst while hot tubbing solo or partying with friends. Be sure to pour the tea into a plastic glass (no glass around the hot tub, please!), add mint or lemon if you like and you’ll be in hot tub bliss.

I like chilled green tea, too. Try any of the green teas from Seattle’s own Three Tree Tea Company. Our personal favorite is Matcha Genmaicha which has tiny kernels of popped rice to enhance the taste and is blended with matcha green tea. In this tea the matcha undergoes a minimal steaming process which creates a superior flavor. We drink it every night after dinner and I put the leftover tea in the fridge to have it chilled and ready to drink while soaking in my Hot Spring Spa.

It has a very pleasant taste and green tea is good for you! Double your health benefits: drink green tea AND soak in your hot tub. Enjoy!
