Like To Read In The Hot Tub? The AquaReader Is For You!

You have to admit that trying to read in your Hot Spring Spa is challenging. Either the book gets wet or your arms get tired holding it aloft.  I know. I’ve been know to sit motionless for hours in the hot tub absorbed in an engrossing novel. It’s only my tired arms that make me leave the tub.

Print junkies can rejoice! The AquaReader offers a stable, buoyant place for books, magazines, reports even a Kindle. The pitch is just right for viewing and there’s even a built in cup holder. What more could you ask for? Reading material stays dry and secure while you stay warm and comfortable sitting upright or lounging with shoulders at or below water level.

You may never leave the tub. Better warn your spouse/partner that you’ll “be awhile”.  Hang a Do Not Disturb sign on the door leading to the hot tub.  Makes a great gift. It’s the perfect summertime hot tub accessory! Available in all Olympic Hot Tub Company stores or order the Aqua Reader from the Olympic Hot Tub Company estore today! We make it so easy to take it easy!

What To Do in The Hot Tub? Give Your Partner as Hand Reflexology Massage!

A really nice thing to do in your Hot Spring Spa is give your partner (and receive!) a hand reflexology massage. We all suffer from things like headaches and backaches from time to time and hand reflexology just might provide quick relief.

Hand reflexology is not as well known as foot reflexology, but the principles are the same. There are points on the hands that correspond to areas of the body. The  diagram above shows those areas.

HOW TO GIVE A HAND REFLEXOLOGY MASSAGE: Gently massage each point in turn starting at the head (around the thumb area) and working down across the neck, throat, and chest down to the feet. Hand reflexology has an advantage over foot reflexology because it can be performed anywhere. Start with gentle pressure.  Increase pressure gradually but ease off if it gets painful.

These are useful techniques to learn for the treatment of simple every day complaints. (Never use it if there is likely to be an under lying injury, or medical condition.) Here are a few:

HEADACHE:

If you have a headache, try stimulating the top of the thumb and the part below which represents the neck area to find relief.

STOMACH UPSET:

Gently massage the heel of the thumb and the area across the center of the hand. If there is pain, stop immediately because this may indicate something deeper that requires medical treatment.

LOWER SPINAL PAIN:

The point where the center of your hand joins your wrist can be stimulated to give relief from lower back pain. This is a perfect antidote to backache caused by sitting at a computer for too long. Always seek medical advice if back pain persists.

Try hand reflexology in hot tub. It can’t hurt, feels good and who doesn’t like to hold hands with your partner?? Let me know how it goes!

Hot Tub Astronomy

Hot tub astronomy is a great thing to do in the summer. Olympic Hot Tub Company customers tell me that it is one of the top benefits of owing a Hot Spring Spa-being out in nature and seeing the stars.  So, sit in your hot tub late at night and star gaze. Say a thank you to the weather for cooperating tonight and tomorrow night by giving us clear skies!

Meteors, also popularly called falling stars or shooting stars are chunks of metal or rock from space that collide with Earth’s atmosphere and vaporize as they fall to Earth. Many stargazers and amateur astronomers enjoy meteor watching. What is the best place and time to see meteors?

Stargazers waiting for the best time to observe the 2010 hopefully spectacular Perseid meteor shower should watch it tonight and tomorrow night after midnight.

The Perseid peaks early on the night of August 12, 2010. That means the best chance of seeing Perseid meteors is between midnight and dawn on the mornings of Thursday August 12 and Friday August 13, 2010. The moon will have set after midnight, so the dark sky will allow stargazers to see more meteors. For more details on the 2010 Perseid meteor shower  and images of Perseid meteors, click on this link.

To see the Perseid meteor shower, find a dark sky and look to the northeast. no binoculars, telescopes, or other optical aids are needed.

Happy hot tub meteor hunting.

Spectacular Light Show May Be Visible From Your Hot Tub Tonight

Attention hot tubbers in Puget Sound. It’s a clear night. Go soak in your Hot Spring Spa, look north and watch for a rare light show.

Here’s why: Earth is bracing for a cosmic tsunami tonight night as tons of plasma from a massive solar flare head directly toward our planet. That’s a photo of the sun “waking up” and shooting  a wall of ionized atoms directly at Earth. Scientists say it is expected to create a geomagnetic storm and a spectacular light show after Sunday’s sun eruption.

“This eruption is directed right at us and is expected to get here early in the day on Aug. 4,” said Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. “It’s the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time.”

The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, was spotted by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which captures high-definition views of the sun at a variety of wavelengths. “We got a beautiful view of this eruption,” Golub said. “And there might be more beautiful views to come if it triggers aurorae.”

Views of aurorae (northern lights) are usually associated with Canada and Alaska, but skywatchers in the northern U.S. mainland are being told they can look toward the north Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for rippling “curtains” of green and red light.

Here’s the science part: When a coronal mass ejection reaches Earth, solar particles stream down our planet’s magnetic field lines toward the poles. In the process, the particles collide with atoms of nitrogen and oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere, which then glow, creating an effect similar to miniature neon signs.

Take a look and let us know if you’re able to see this light show. Even if you don’t see the light show, you’ll see masses of stars and that’s always a good thing.

What Not To Bring In The Hot Tub-The Top Ten No, Nos of Hot Tubbing

You can have a great summer of soaking in your Hot Spring Spa by following these tips.

1. Alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant and hot water is a stimulant. Passing out or falling asleep in the hot tub is not hard to do after a few drinks.  There have been deaths due to drowning in hot tubs attributed to alcohol use.  So, save the drinks for after your soak.

2. Glass. You want to stay hydrated while soaking and drinking a cool “glass” of water, fruit juice or tea is such a pleasant way to go. But it’s so easy to drop a “glass” made of glass and have it shatter on the way to the tub or once you’re soaking.  Of course, you don’t want glass fragments in or around the tub. Always use plastic cups and containers around the hot tub.

3. Bubble Bath or other sudsing agents. Sure it looks like fun seeing all of the foam that can result from hot water, jets and bubble bath, but it’s a sorry mess to clean up. Typically it’s best to drain the tub and start over with fresh water if bubble bath or high sudsing agents have been added to the hot tub either accidentally or as a prank. First clean the filters and the spa shell if you find mountains of foam. Add fresh water and balancers to clean water.

4. Swimming Pool Chemicals. It’s tempting as you’re cruising the aisles of big box stores to fall for really cheap chlorine that’s says for “Pools and hot tubs”.  STOP! BAD IDEA. Swimming pool chemicals are for swimming pools. They’re not for use in the higher temperatures of a hot tub. Hot tub water chemicals, especially chlorine have a specific formula that lasts in hot water won’t turn the water cloudy and has the right pH for hot tubbing. Buy o chemicals that are specifically formulated for hot tubs and spas. For example, SeaKlear brand makes a distinction between all water care products. They’re clearly labeled “pool” or “spa”. Pool chlorine is a calcium based formula; hot tub chlorine is a sodium based formula. If it doesn’t say sodium di-chlor on the label, leave it on the shelf no matter how cheap it is! The advice applies to water balancers. If it doesn’t say ” for hot tubs and spas” on the label, don’t buy it.

5. Electronics. Water and electronics don’t mix. Stick to battery operated toys and games unless the music or television system is part of your hot tub or spa and designed to operate near water. Wouldn’t you hate to drop your i-pod or iphone in the water?

6. Bathing Suits washed with soap. Avoid sudsy residue by rinsing suits in water only. Even if you’ve worn your suit in a heavily chlorinated swimming pool, you don’t need soap to rinse only clear water.

7. Open Sores. Please use common sense and let open sores heal before tub tub soaking.

8. A Hot, Sweaty Body. Even though today’s advanced water care systems can handle sweat, why not shower first and avoid potential water problems? Sweat has organic compounds that are neutralized by chlorine, but the more sweat the greater the need for chlorine and shock. And, it’s best to cool down before you soak anyway.

9. Sun Tan Oil. Why add oil to the tub? Rinse off before you soak.

10. A Grumpy Attitude. Soaking is about relaxing and having fun. Chill out on land and come to the tub with an open heart and mellow attitude.

View the Full Moon Tonight From Your Hot Tub!

Take advantage of the clear skies and full moon-soaking in your Hot Spring Spa tonight will be a rare treat. The full moon on the 25th of July is called the Buck Moon by Native Americans of the Great Lakes and New England. The name comes from this time of year when new antlers of the buck deer begin to appear. It’s also called “Thunder Moon” because of summer storms.

Whatever you want to call it, don’t miss hot tubbing tonight! There’s nothing better than hot tubbing under a big summer full moon. It’ll be clear tonight so don’t miss this opportunity to bathe under the moon and stars. Count the number of satellites  and call out the constellations and major stars. Sink into the water and relax completely. It’s doesn’t get any better than this!

Hot Tub Blog Celebrates Two Years of Hot Tub Bliss

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years of blogging about hot tubs and hot tubbing here on Hot Tub Bliss. Thanks for all of your comments, suggestions, and encouragement. I’ve enjoyed writing about all things “hot tub” including health, lifestyle, water care and Hot Spring Spas. The largest response to any post? “More on How to Save the Whales While Soaking In Your Hot Tub”. Most read post: “Foam in Your Hot Tub? Not a Good thing! What to Do to End Foam Forever.”

Hot Tub Bliss is written to connect you with all things from “ahhh” to “aHa”. The “ahhhs” are the sounds that escape when you sink into the hot swirling waters after a long day. That hot water is so soothing and healing that letting out a big  sigh  is the only way to stand the pleasure.

The “aHas”-are those ideas and split-second inspirations that bubble up when you’re relaxed. Inspiration and “brainstorms” have always been an important part of hot tub soaking. The “staycations” you enjoy every day in your own backyard hot tub can bring quiet and sometimes awe inspiring pleasure. So, do share your “aHas!”

And, for fun, tell me about the fabulous vacations you’ve taken with your Olympic Hot Tub Company rubber duck in hand. Some of your ducks have seen the Seven Wonders of the World, and we have photos from hundreds of exotic places to prove it. Remember to pack a duck in your suitcase and take it along on your next vacation. Place the duck in interesting spots and send the photos to us. We’d love to see how far these ducks travel.

So, chime in and share how your hot tub makes a difference in your health, work, life and lives of your family members. Email photos of your own fabulous tubscape.  Recall what happened and how you felt when you finally made your hot tub purchase, perhaps after waiting years to say, “YES.”

With Hot Tub Bliss I intend to create hot tub evangelists all over the world, one soak at a time. Come on in and visit often. The water’s fine!

Comments and suggestions on blog posts and for new blog topics are always welcome.

July 14th Is National Nude Day!

National Nude Day is today July 14th. As a hot tub lover, you may love hot tub soaking in the nude, but not want to show it all when not heading for the water.  Right? But National Nude Day is one kind of  celebration  for how to keep cool on a hot , sticky summer day.

National Nude Day is a purported to be a serious event with all of the nudist groups around the world.  Nudists believe that the body is a beautiful thing, and meant to be displayed.  We’re not disputing the “beautiful”, it’s the “display”  that most people have a problem with! Nudist colonies, nude beaches, and other venues exist to cater to the preferences of individuals who seek to walk around “au natural”.

We will not speak to whether this is right or wrong. We’re simply making you aware  of this holiday. Snicker if you will. But, no “sleeze”  please about this holiday. We have no photo to illustrate this post because there is nothing worse than seeing someone’s hot tub party pics the day after.  Check out our hot tub etiquette tips for more on this.  Imagination is just that..and so much better left to the imagination in this case!

Interestingly, we found a lot of sites promoting Nude Day T-shirts. But, isn’t this problematic? How can you wear a T-shirt on National Nude Day!??

The Origin of National Nude Day:  Our research couldn’t locate the creator, or the origin of this day. Although this “holiday” appears to have originated in New Zealand, we didn’t find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day.  We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.  Oh well, it’s fun any way!

Thanks to Holiday Insights for the info on National Nude Day.

Nude in the hot tub or not nude? Let us know which you prefer. Or, does your choice of bathing suit or not depend on whom you’re soaking with?
