“I Feel Better, Look Better, Lost Weight, Have More Energy” Thanks to my Infrared Sauna. One Owner’s Story

Here’s a great email from Mark , Sales Associate in our Olympic Issaquah store. He shares his journey from skeptic to infrared sauna owner and lists all of the benefits he’s accrued by owning one. His story is so typical of our Olympic sauna buyers. They’ve searched for better health and avoidance of the bodily decline that starts to occur in one’s 40′s and, like Mark, found the answer to be an infrared sauna.   Read on. It’s inspirational!

Hello Alice:

I’ve always been athletic and conscious of my body and have lived a healthy lifestyle since I was a teenager.  Exercise and eating healthy were and still are important to me.  I noticed a change in my body when I turned 40 years old and I began to realize that exercising and diet were not enough. I started noticing my body took longer to recuperate from even just light exercise and some of the daily strains we all put on ourselves.  And of course I noticed feeling differently when I used certain medications if I wasn’t feeling good, salty food, an extra glass of wine with a big meal, and much more. I felt like I had less energy and more drained during the day, lethargic, and just more toxic than ever before. I wondered why this was happening to me since I had always been so health conscious, but I just kind of chalked it up to getting older.

Then one day I was having a discussion with a gentleman and he told me about his experience with his own “infrared sauna”.  He went on to tell me about all the benefits he obtained from just taking a 30 minute session a day – significantly reduced his lower back pain he had had from a car accident; loosened him up prior to exercising, loss of weight and 500 calories he burned per session, better sleep, and really the fact that he felt 10 years younger every time he took one.

Now you would think at this point I would have done something about it since his situation was very close to mine, and I could really relate.  Over the next year I talked to others, and there were many, that had purchased their own infrared sauna and told me about all the benefits they obtained from using one.  I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions, and I have never found anything bad or negative about infrared saunas, people love them.

So finally about 2 years ago I purchased one and put it in my own home and I’ve been absolutely sold on all the amazing benefits that I’ve received since.  I look better.  I feel better. I have much more energy.  I’ve lost weight. My aches and pains have diminished. My skin looks fantastic. I could go on and on. Plus it’s fun to take an infrared sauna session, it’s relaxing and peaceful, and I even have a big screen TV right outside my infrared sauna.  I watch a movie while I’m in my sauna, it’s like exercising without doing anything at all.

I personally believe everyone should have an infrared sauna in America.  They are truly amazing wellness machines.  Please do yourself a favor and go try one or buy one, then you will see for yourself what the benefits are.

Warm regards
Mark

The Heartbreak of Acne-A Far Infrared Sauna Can Help

What teenager doesn’t want beautiful skin? During the teen years, the presence of acne can be truly heartbreaking. What’s the best advice for teenagers with acne? Deep facial cleansing using a far infrared sauna. Read on!

Acne is one of the most trying problems in a teenager’s life, and they will often do whatever it takes to clear their face of the red bumps. There are a lot of acne treatments on the market, but few outside of prescription drugs actually work. Want an acne cure without prescription drugs and spending a fortune on potions & creams? Sit in a sauna twenty or thirty minutes a day.

First some background: Acne is caused by dead skin cells and bacteria that get trapped in hair follicles.  Sweat rinses bacteria out of the epidermal layer and sweat ducts.  At the same time the skin is cleansed, dead cells are replaced, keeping the skin in good condition and creating a soft, youthful appearance. While sitting in a hot sauna does open the hair follicles and allow the body to sweat out acne causing debris, this doesn’t always rid the sufferer of his or her acne. Once the skin has cooled and the hair follicles close up, there can still be sweat and bacteria trapped in the follicles that begins to fester, and this can make ones face break out even more.

Next step: If you want to use the sauna a few times a week, make sure you wash your face with a gentle cleanser to get rid of that sweat before it gets re-trapped in your skin follicles and becomes a problem.

Recommendations of this treatment are not unanimous, though. Half of the acne sufferers who try it saying that a sauna makes their acne worse, and the other half say that they couldn’t live without weekly trips to the sauna. What’s the difference? A steam sauna versus an infrared sauna.

What if a steam sauna doesn’t cure your acne? Some acne sufferers complain that their condition worsens after steam  sauna use, even after carefully washing their faces after wards. For those who find that the steam just makes things worse, the newer, infrared heat sauna may give them the cure they’re longing for.

Steam saunas basically heat up your body by raising the room temperature with steam and heat. This can make the sauna a little unbearable, and many people can barely take too much of it at one sitting.  Infrared saunas use the tested and proven safe infrared heat rays that penetrate the body more deeply without the high temperatures of conventional steam saunas.

Most users say that the infrared sauna heat works wonders for their skin. Just a few minutes, a few times a week will help to clear up your acne. The infrared heat can also minimize scarring that result from bad acne.  Also, always remember to wash your face with a gentle cleanser after any sauna time.

One final tip for guys: Big night date coming up? Look your best with a close shave. Infrared sauna use improves shaving. As the heat of the sauna opens pores, hair follicles are softened, making it easier to get a close shave.

Finnleo Sauna Owners Talk About the Benefits

The Wall Street Journal reports today that “The Home Improvement That’s the Hottest of Them All” is a sauna! Our customers have been telling us about their experiences with their Finnleo saunas and we couldn’t agree more. Saunas are hot!

While we  at Olympic Hot Tub Company haven’t published any scientific studies on sauna benefits, we can tell you what our customers are saying after they purchase a Finnleo sauna from us.

For one thing they  report better skin. Many of our women owners have been asked if they’d had face lifts!

Stress relief was the top benefit, but a strengthened immune system was a surprise benefit for most. Most of our customers reported a decrease in colds and flu or said they haven’t been sick since they bought a sauna and started using it.

“A quiet time together, a get away from it all, a place to unwind” are all mentioned as sauna benefits. And, for those with arthritis or any joint or muscle pain, having a place at home to ease those aches & pains was a real bonus.

You can benefit, too.  You can add a Finnleo sauna to your home for less than the cost of a good cup of coffee a day! Most people mention better health as their top New Year’s resolution.  Installing an in-home sauna is the easiest way to improve your health and keep that resolution.

Want Better Skin? Skip the Creams, Avoid Surgery-Get an In-Home Sauna

Fact: The regular use of a sauna WILL improve your skin and keep it looking younger.
How does sauna bathing keep your skin healthy and looking young? First some background on the human body: The skin acts much like a third kidney in elimination of toxic waste from the body. It is, though, far more complex than the kidneys and is only second to the brain in complexity. Think about that! The skin is a network of blood vessels, nerve endings, vessels for carrying lymph, pigmentation, oil glands, hair follicles, and cells that waterproof and deny entry to bacteria and sweat glands. The skin is so important to life that death by accumulated poisons can occur within hours if the skin and its sweat passges are smothered. Remember the movie “Goldfinger”?

The skin of  a regular sauna bather is supple and healthy. Properly cared for skin is better able to resist eczema, athlete’s foot, pimples and blackheads.  What’s the #1 thing people tell us after they’ve purchased a Finnleo sauna from Olympic Hot Tub Company?  “My skin has never looked better!!  Friends ask me if I’ve had a face lift.”

Combine sweat bathing and brushing with a loofah or rough brush removes flakes of dried skin cells that accumulate on the outer layer. All of that “dead skin”clogs sweat pores and oil passages and results in a dry, flaky residue.

It’s been said that most people deep clean their carpets more often than they deep clean their skin! Give your skin a break and improve your overall health by taking sauna baths regularly. Wouldn’t you love to look younger without expensive creams and/or surgery?

Installing a sauna at home is a very inexpensieve, time saving and convenient way to maintain good health. Install a sauna for affordable self-care at home! If you’re not fond of a sweaty, hot sauna, the new far-infrared saunas are for you!  You sweat, but the room does not get excessively hot. And, the soft dry heat penetrates deeper into the skin for better results. For overall clean, clear skin-get a sauna.

Taking A Sauna Can Reduce Cold and Flu Symptoms AND Speed Your Recovery

Scientists recently confirmed the age-old notion that hot liquids can relieve some cold and flu symptoms. But what about a dose of heat on a much larger scale – say, in a sauna? The answer is yes according to an article in the New York Times in February last year.  Flu and colds are coming our way this winter. Install a sauna now and be prepared for better health this winter.

With temperatures of 176 Fahrenheit or greater, saunas have been recommended for arthritis, asthma and chronic fatigue syndrome, among other things, since they were used by nomads in Finland centuries ago. Some reputed benefits have not been studied scientifically, but there is evidence that saunas may speed recovery from colds and reduce their occurrence according to the Times report.

Some researchers suspect sauna heat reduces symptoms because it improves drainage, while others speculate that the high temperatures help weaken cold and flu viruses. Why this might prevent sickness in the first place, however, is unclear. But research suggests an effect.

Nobel‐Prize winner Dr. Andre Lwoff, a French virologist and microbiologist shared the 1965 prize in physiology and medicine for just such a theory. He reported that high temperatures during infection help combat the growth of a virus. High temperatures can be induced artificially and cause heavy sweating. He believes that high temperature during infection helps combat the growth of virus. “Therefore, fever should not be brought down with drugs,” he said.

In one study by Austrian researchers, a group of 50 adults were tracked for 6 months. One group was told to use a sauna regularly; the other group was told not to use a sauna. At the end of the study, the sauna bathing group had contracted half the number of colds than the non-sauna bathers.

This is great news. It’s simple, natural, non-invasive and requires no drugs! This is strong evidence that sauna use might reduce or prevent cold symptoms all together and strengthen the immune system. Sauna bathing is good for your health in many other ways. Once you realize the many things a sauna can do for you, you’ll want one. Try a sauna today. Are you willing to give up ever having a nasty winter cold or the flu again?

Top 10 Tips for Making the Most of Your Sauna Experience

It’s Fall and time to start thinking about taking  saunas. A sauna is great for your skin,  your mind and general health and well-being. Try these tips for making your sauna time even more worthwhile.

1. USE FRAGRANCE. Aromatherapy oil such as eucalyptus, pine, citrus, lavender or peppermint can add to your experience in the sauna. The benefits of using these oils vary. Eucalyptus is the  favorite scent for its clean and natural aroma. Lavender is good for tension relief.

2. GO NAKED! Wear a bathing suit in a public sauna out of modesty, but at home nude is the rule. The fabric of  women’s bathing suits in particular is so insulating that you’ll feel uncomfortable very quickly in the heat of the sauna. Let every inch of skin-the body’s largest organ-reap the benefits of sweating unbound.

3. PLAY MUSIC. Many saunas have music and entertainment systems. Play something soothing or meditative. Many sauna owners meditate in the sauna and report that their best meditation is done while there. If you do meditate, be sure to time your session so you don’t stay in too long.

4. USE 100% COTTON TOWELS. Invest in the best Turkish towels you can afford. 100% cotton towels with a full loft are the best for absorbing sweat and will feel best on your skin. A loofah is recommended to scrub off  dry dead skin.

5. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR.  Always ask your doctor before you sauna if you have heart problems or any health condition for which heat is not advised.

6. DRINK WATER. You must  stay hydrated. No alcohol, please. Alcohol is not only dehydrating it lowers blood pressure while the heat raises blood pressure. Even if you’re in peak condition, it’s not wise to drink alcohol in the sauna. Save that cold beer or glass of wine for after your sauna.

7. SAUNA ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. Avoid the sauna after eating.  Heavy food or a full meal and sauna bathing do not mix. If you’re hungry, a piece of fruit before a sauna will tide you over until you’ve finished bathing. After a sauna you’re not likely to feel as hungry as you normally would. Eat something light after. Do this on a regular basis and watch the pounds melt away.

8. TAKE OFF YOUR JEWELRY.  Remove all metal jewelry (gold, silver etc.) before you sauna. Jewelry left on can heat up and may burn you. It’s happened. Experience being completely nude without rings, necklaces, earrings or bracelets.

9. TAKE A COLD SHOWER AFTER YOUR SAUNA. In winter,  roll in the snow like the Finns do in between sauna sessions. The sensation of cold after the heat of a sauna is fantastically stimulating. A cold shower will invigorate your skin, rinse off sweat and close your pores.

10. TAKE TIME TO RELAX AFTER A SAUNA. Don’t plan to jump out and tackle a big project, go for a long run or do strenuous exercise. Take advantage of the feeling of complete relaxation. Return to your busy schedule slowly.

A final tip: DON’T TAKE YOUR IPHONE, BLACKBERRY, ETC. IN THE SAUNA and remove all jewelry before taking a sauna.

Top 10 Tips for Buying the RIGHT Infrared Sauna the First Time

If you’ve heard the buzz about infrared saunas and are thinking of purchasing one for your health, use these tips to find the best value. Cheaper is not better with sauna purchases. Save time; save hassles and ultimately save money buying the right one for your maximum benefit – the first time.

1. “Test drive” to get the comfort – and the look – you want.
Taking a sauna is the only way you’ll be able to judge whether it’s right for you. Would you buy a car without taking a test drive? Of course not. Find a local dealer who has saunas you can try out before you buy. (We have saunas for you to try at Olympic.)

Design is the most obvious reason to choose a particular sauna. But design is more than skin deep. There must be no visible external buckles. Look for furniture quality detailing including fine-grained wood throughout (not coarse grain which will peel over time). Look for custom-made molding, comfortable seating, and doors and windows that are thoughtfully designed to complement the sauna.

2. Wood choices. Which is best?
Make sure the sauna you select is constructed from smooth, hand-selected tongue-and-groove, vertical grain hemlock or western red cedar. For lasting beauty, hemlock and cedar are best.

Make sure the wood is certified from a sustainable forest, meaning that the forest is planted, harvested correctly and replanted after harvesting for the least environmental impact. The wood for cheaper models sold on the Internet comes from Burma (now called Myanmar) and is not so certified. Cutting down the rain forest to make saunas is just plain wrong.

3. Looking for optimum health benefits? Construction matters.
Tightly fitted joints and screws rather than glue construction mark a sauna that’s built to last. Cheaper saunas rely on glue to keep the joints sealed rather than detailed craftsmanship. Breathing heated glue that emits gasses in the sauna is not healthy. You want pure air in your sauna!

4. Get delivery, installation AND warranty protection!
Peace of mind is everything! You’re buying a sauna for relaxation, so why tackle the delivery, set-up and installation when you don’t have to? Select a local company that will deliver, set up and install your sauna in a few hours. You won’t regret it. You’ll save time and hassle and your sauna will be put together the right way! The company you select should be able to handle any warranty issues, too. You don’t want to have to hire an electrician to troubleshoot the wiring if something goes wrong, then send parts to a factory, wait for their return and re-install. Installation and warranty are, of course, yet another reason to avoid buying a sauna on the Internet. Be smart – buy local from a company that will be there to help you! (You’ll always find free delivery & set-up on most indoor models when you purchase from Olympic Hot Tub Company.)

5. Ceramic vs carbon heat panels? Carbon wins.
There are 2 different types of infrared heat emitters: ceramic and carbon. Many cheaper saunas – especially those sold on the Internet – use ceramic rods or coils in their panels. But carbon panels are far superior to ceramic. Here’s why:

Top quality carbon panels provide the softest, most enjoyable far-infrared heat available. They heat up faster and give a much broader distribution of heat so you don’t get ‘hot spots’ or ‘cold spots’ in your sauna as you do with ceramic heaters. Yet the room itself doesn’t get hot like traditional steam saunas do (provided you have enough heating panels – see point #6 below). You can also lean up against carbon panels, unlike ceramic, which can get too hot to touch. In fact, ceramic panels actually make the sauna room too hot and don’t give an optimal far-infrared penetration for the best therapy. Just because the ceramic makes the room hot doesn’t mean it’s giving you the most effective therapy.

Carbon emitters give you greater heat absorption and cover more surface area so you get a better sweat (and therefore a more effective sauna session). Look for carbon panels imported from Japan, which operate at safer and more comfortable sauna temperatures – the room will be warm, not hot. Japanese technology produces panels that emit radiant heat, which penetrates deeply and produces more sweat than ceramic panels.
Carbon-heated infrared saunas also tend to heat up faster (10 – 15 minutes) than ceramic-heated saunas (30 – 45 minutes), which can save on electricity cost. The typical carbon infrared sauna costs only 10 – 15 cents a session!

6. Don’t skimp on the number of carbon panels. The number of carbon panels and their placement is IMPORTANT.
Most Infrared saunas will have heaters on the back panel, under the seat and in front of you on either side of the door. The best models will have carbon panels on the sides of the sauna as well. The more square inches of heater coverage, the better!

Although not as important as the type of heater emitter (see point #5 above), the number of panel heaters a sauna has can influence the time it takes for a sauna to heat up as well as how much and how fast you start to sweat. Obviously, having more heaters means you sweat faster and experience more benefit.

Look for the maximum number of heat panels and the highest total square inches of heater coverage in the size unit you’re considering. Fewer panels means your sauna will take more time to heat up – which can cost you in electricity bills. It can also be a pain to have to wait 45 minutes for your sauna to heat up!

A wall-to-wall heating system ensures a complete enveloping heat with no cold spots or hot spots. Without this wall-to-wall heating system, you’ll have to turn yourself into a human pretzel, turning your body this way and that to get in front of a panel, to experience maximum sweat. Too few carbon panels in your sauna will never give you the relaxation you’re looking for.

7. Control panels – inside AND out – are a must.
Most saunas have a control panel on the outside of the unit where you can set the heat, time, turn on lights, etc. But that’s not all you should look for. It’s important to have a control panel inside the sauna so you don’t have to leave the sauna to make changes.

Then look beyond location – not all controls are created equal! Look for easy-to-use digital controls that have set temperature, actual temperature, set time and time remaining. Controls should also include light switches for internal and external lights and color light therapy system.

8. Size matters. Smaller is NOT better.
Infrared saunas range in size from 1-person up to 6-person units and price varies accordingly. Consider the space you have available in your home as well as where the sauna will be placed. A popular option is a corner unit that saves floor space yet still has a roomy interior.

Make no mistake: a 1-personal sauna is ONLY a 1-person sauna – there’s no room to move around. Do not purchase a 1-person sauna unless you live alone and don’t plan to share your sauna experience, or have the smallest of apartments. The most popular saunas are models that give you enough room to lie down on a bench for maximum relaxation. No one has ever returned to one of our stores saying they were sorry they bought a big sauna. But we have had buyers buy a 1-person and come back to exchange it for a larger one.

9. Look for inner and outer lighting and light therapy.
Most infrared saunas do come with interior lights, but it’s always important to check. Interior lights are a must if you want to read during your sauna sessions.

Some models also come with exterior lights, which can turn your sauna into a furniture showpiece that your houseguests will admire. Other saunas offer a variety of colored lights so you can use your sauna for color light therapy, which is recommended for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) that’s so common in our overcast Northwest winters.

Better-made saunas include the lighting as standard. Don’t omit these lighting features that will make each sauna use pure pleasure.

10. Easily bored? Choose entertainment options.
If you don’t plan to read or meditate, what will you do in the sauna?

Answer: have entertainment at your fingertips by adding a high quality radio and DVD player at the time you purchase. Having your own entertainment center can help you enjoy a longer, more luxurious sauna session without getting bored. Playing relaxing videos or classical music on the radio will help pass the time and deepen your sense of calm and well-being. Some saunas come with TVs so you can watch your favorite program while you sweat and lose weight!

Consider these top 10 tips when choosing your infrared sauna.
Your best bet: a Finnleo Sauna from Olympic Hot Tub Company. Far infrared saunas can help you detox, lose weight, look younger, boost your immune system, invigorate your sex life and even banish cellulite. If you take your time and do your research before you buy, you’ll select a Finnleo sauna and get the most long lasting, best performing sauna for your needs.

Dr. Andrew Weil Says: Take a Sauna 2-3 Times a Week for Optimum Health

In his book “8 Weeks to Optimum Health-A Proven Program for Taking Full Advantage of Your Body’s Natural Healing Power “, noted natural health practitioner, Dr. Andrew Weil recommends taking a sauna bath 2-3 times a week. The health benefits are unbeatable he says.  Saunas promote sweating by exposing the skin to high heat. The body’s surface temperature while sitting in a sauna, even briefly, can rise to 104 degrees F. The heart rate will increase, and blood will begin to circulate toward the skin surface, causing the body to sweat as it cools itself down.

Many people believe it is this process that is the biggest benefit of a sauna.  Dr. Weil says that “when you take a sauna, the heat pumps up blood circulation near the skin and stimulates sweating. The Finns say a proper sauna elicits about a quart of sweat per hour. … It helps the body rid itself of unwanted materials and improves general circulation.”

Dr Weil also says in his health column, “I’m a sauna enthusiast, and I often recommend “sweat bathing” in saunas to cleanse the skin, soothe sore muscles, or simply relax. Sweating in a sauna can also be beneficial to patients with arthritis, asthma or respiratory infections, and is a good way to recover from overindulgence in food or drink. The sweating rids the body of excess sodium and other unwanted substances. It also helps eliminate drugs and some toxins and by doing so can take some of the workload off the liver and kidneys. I recommend regular visits to saunas or steam rooms to patients with liver or kidney disease.

Sweating in a sauna or steam room dilates the blood vessels, which reduces blood pressure and increases circulation to the skin. You don’t need much time in the heat – 10 to 20 minutes is enough to work up a good sweat.

If you have high blood pressure or a heart problem, be sure to check with your physician before going to a sauna or steam room. The heat can cause circulatory changes, including an increased heart rate. Overall, however, the only real risk to a sauna or steam room is spending too much time sweating. You can faint from overheating and from dehydration. Be sure to drink lots of water before, during and after your sweat.”

Take it from Dr. Weil whose enjoys a worldwide reputation for wellness advocacy. He  firmly believes that taking the steps to maintain good health pays huge dividends as we age. Taking a sauna 2-3 times a week is one giant step to attaining optimum health. He’s not the only raving fan of saunas. Our Olympic Hot Tub Company customers who have purchased saunas can’t say enough about the benefits!
