Since May is the beginning of the BIG gardening season in Seattle and the time when rain is less frequent, gardeners start to think about having to water their flowers and lawns.

I want to use the water from my hot tub on the garden, it is a great waste to just put it  down down the drain.  The water has chlorine in it.  Is there any way I can remove the chlorine from it to make it safe to water my garden?”

YES! Read on.

A few years ago when Seattle was in the middle of a drought, the City of Seattle Water Department called me to discuss using hot tub water to water lawns and flowers (although not vegetable gardens). The topic came under the heading of  “gray” water- that is, water that has been used once and is not now pristine.

The City is all in favor of using hot tub water to water lawns and flowerbeds provided that gardeners follow our prescribed method for draining safely:

1. CHLORINE

   When you’re ready to drain, do not add chlorine for 1-2 days. Chlorine is very hard on plant life. However, it dissipates so quickly from a hot hot tub (which is why you have to keep adding it!) that in a day or so there is no chlorine present in the tub.  Leave the lid open. Check chlorine levels with a test kit to make sure they are at zero. If they’re not, run the jets for 1-2 hours with the lid open and the chlorine will be gone.

2. pH Plants in Seattle are accustomed to a slightly acid rain and tap water. If the hot tub water is too alkaline, plant life may suffer. Check to make sure that the hot tub water tests in the 7.2-7.4 range (neutral) before draining. If not, adjust the pH and run the jets to make sure any chemicals you’ve added are thoroughly mixed.

The Journal reports that thousands of Americans are choosing to join a small, but growing, number of “brain gyms” springing up around the country. Similar brain-teaser programs are available on home computers, sometimes free of charge. The scientific jury is still out on the efficacy of such software.

The centerpiece of most outlets is a computer lab equipped with software from companies with names like Posit Science Corp., CogniFit Ltd., Lumos Labs Inc. and Happy Neuron Inc. Like gym rats who hit the weight machines or take Pilates classes, some users of the new technology say they prefer working with personal trainers. In this context, sessions are spent doing things like mental-fitness assessments and relaxation exercises in addition to basic cognitive training.

Even community centers and retirement homes are offering “brain gyms” to help residents stay sharp.

Have you joined a brain gym or do brain “exercise” online?  If so, increase your performance by soaking in your Hot Spring Spa BEFORE a session.  The increased blood flow to the brain as a result of soaking helps with alertness and mental acuity!  Do a controlled test on yourself.  Do the “exercises” without soaking for a week. I’ve met a WONDERFUL new man, who I just adore, and we were talking about what could make our wedding night special, since we’ve both been married and had kids and all that… stuff. I said something about always wanting to have someone with me in a hot tub that I could cuddle with and just enjoy (my ex was SO not a cuddler or anything like that) so we decided that on our wedding night we will for sure get a room with a big hot tub… so my blog started out as just as my thoughts and feelings as he and I start to get to know each other and as we progress towards the day we get married… but then it sort of took over a life of it’s own.. ”

Cold decreases blood flow, lessens inflammation, and blocks pain by numbing. Heat increases blood flow, increases elasticity of tissue, decreases stiffness, relaxes muscles and promotes healing.

When injuries are new, and there is swelling present, immediate use of ice is the best choice. Ice is effective in reducing bruising, reducing pain and swelling and should be used for the first 48-72 hours or until the swelling has gone away.

What about heat? Heat can reduce muscle spasms, improve joint stiffness and make soft tissue more limber. Moist heat is more effective than dry heat, as it penetrates deeper for muscles, joints and soft tissue. Hot tubs are ideal for this second stage of healing. The constant temperature and jets act to promote the quickest healing.

Take a tip from Willie McGinest-the NFL’s most senior linebacker. After 15 years in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, McGinest has become a master at surviving training camp. Early in his career, he says, he reached a peak in his training during the off season and would arrive at camp worn out. He’s learned to pace himself through training.

“The biggest reason he’s lasted 15 years is he’s a tremendous athlete,” says Brown’s Coach Romeo Crennel in an interview in USA Today. Crennel also coached McGinest as the New England defensive coordinator. “But he has seen a little bit of everything. He understands what it takes to play this game, how to prepare, how to manage himself. And he knows his body.”

As the world turns! I turned the offer of a product placement down, but was quite amused by the concept of hot tubbing in a reality show. I’ve been talking about the hot tub as the place to communicate and maintain relationships for years. Away from distractions like TV and phones, many couples tell us they go in every night to talk about their day and stay connected. In fact, one of the top reasons for purchasing is relationship togetherness. Being in hot water almost makes a fight impossible. If there’s any chance to salvage a relationship, talking it out in a hot tub is a great place to start.

But if the bond is already broken, here’s something else I’ve observed. Once the divorce is final, the partner who didn’t get the house and the hot tub, comes in to buy a bigger one!
